Gilmore and Steckley Strike for Women’s Soccer in NEWMAC Worcester-City Battle at Clark

WORCESTER --- WPI women's soccer's Mia Gilmore (Canton, MA) and Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) recorded goals to propel the Crimson and Gray to a 2-1 comeback victory over Worcester-city and NEWMAC foe Clark at the Granger Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers lift their record to 6-2-4 on the season, 3-0-2 in NEWMAC play while the Cougars fall to 3-9 on the year and 0-5 in conference action.

Isabella Ramirez (New York City, NY) fired off a rocket that was kept away by WPI's Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) as senior Isabel Echeverry (Pawtucket, RI) corralled the rebound and punched the ball into the back of the net in the 18th minute for the go-ahead goal.

WPI responded about 20 minutes later in the half as Fiona Prendergast (Sudbury, MA) threaded a ball through multiple Cougar defenders to connect with a streaking Gilmore (Canton, MA) who beat the last line of defense and dribbled around Clark's Anabella White (Manhattan Beach, CA) for the equalizer at 38:18

The Crimson and Gray struck again in the second half of action as Jess English (Ledyard, CT) launched a ball from just outside of the Engineers' 18-yard box to opposite side of the field which was tracked down by Steckley and raced past the Cougars defense to finish near side for the penultimate goal in the 61st minute for her fifth marker of the season.

WPI outshot the hosts 14-6 with a 6-2 mark in shots on target and enjoyed a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Hellerman posted a save in the Engineers' win as White tallied four saves in the setback.

Both squads return to the pitch on Wednesday as the Engineers host NEWMAC-foe Wheaton at 6pm as Clark hits the road for a 4pm match at Salve Regina.
