Women’s Soccer NEWMAC Tournament Excursion Ends in Championship at MIT

Cambridge, MA --- The WPI women's soccer program concluded its upset tour in the NEWMAC Tournament Championship at top-seeded MIT on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.

With the defeat, the Crimson and Gray concluded its third trip to the NEWMAC title match as the seventh seed in 2024. WPI rounded out a three-game week avenging a pair of regular season losses at No. 2 Springfield on Tuesday and No. 6 Emerson on Thursday. This year's appearance in the championship is the third in program history as both the previous matchups were against MIT in 2019 that resulted in a loss and 2016 when WPI clinched the tournament crown.

MIT took control early offensively rifling off five shots as Sean Luk (Bel Air, MD) corralled the ball and played across the box to Arianna Doss (Houston, TX) who turned towards goal and ripped a strike from the right side for the go-ahead goal at 26:02 in the first half of the match. The Crimson and Gray then responded by recording a shot on frame by first year Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) but MIT's Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, CA) extended the lead for the hosts at 31:53 and remained as the content progressed to halftime.

MIT continued to strike in the second half as the hosting Engineers recorded six shots as WPI's Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) shutdown five of the shots as the other was blocked by the Crimson and Gray defense. Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, CA) dribbled the ball up the left side of the pitch crossing into the box to Luk who spun around a WPI defender and buried the final tally of the match in the top left corner.

MIT enjoyed an 18-2 advantage in shots and 5-2 mark in corner kick opportunities on the afternoon. Hellerman closed out her career with six stops on the afternoon for her fourth-most in a singular game this season.

WPI sees its season end at 10-7-4 as MIT will await their next opponent in the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer selection on Monday at 2pm.
