WORCESTER -- After three days of competition at the 2024 Gompei Invitational at the Sports and Recreation Center, the WPI men's and women's swimming and diving teams brought home a second place finish piling on 6,455.5 points over the three-day meet.
Division I Bryant hung on for the win finishing with 8901.5 combined points. Following the Engineers, Bentley finished third with 468.5 points, Springfield finished fourth (3,778.5), Williams took fifth (3,778.5), Brandeis was sixth (2,563), Sacred Heart finished seventh (2,557), Central Connecticut State earned eighth (1,503), Merrimack finished ninth (964) and Clark rounded out the competition in 10th (701).
The Engineers rounded out the meet with 13 top-10 finishes on the final day of competition highlighted by a trio of runner up finishes by the diving duo of
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) and
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) and rookie
Sarah Kang's (Richmond, VA) 200 Back performance.
Yurista began the final events off with a second place finish in the 3 meter dive with a score of 403.75 while Corrente also earned a runner-up finish in the men's one-meter with a score of 404.40.
The night events kicked off with the 100 Free as
Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA) finished in 17th place for the Engineers with a time of 54.16. On the men's side of things,
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) and
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) took part in the A Final finishing 6-7 with times of 46.77 and 46.79 respectively. In the B Final,
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) took second, finishing 12th overall with a time of 46.83 while
Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA) took 18th with a time of 48.17.
The 200 Back came next as brought home her highest finish at the meet, touching the wall in second place with a time of 2:04.84, a season best time. In the B final,
Maria Korneva (Boylston, MA),
Anna Callaghan (Yorktown Heights, NY) and
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO) took 17-18-19 with times of 2:15.26, 2:16. 74 and 2:17.40 respectively.
On the men's side of things
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) brought home a fifth place, 1:55.87 finish while
Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) and
Jacob Antonovich (Fairfax, VT) finished 2-3 in the B Final with times of 2:00.19 and 2:01.54. Joining them in the B Final were
Luke Sperling (Downington, PA) who took 16th with a time of 2:04.90 and
Jake Thomas (Wenham, MA) who clocked in 18th place with a time of 2:08.47.
Joey Hemmerle (Natick, MA) earned the C Final victory with a time of 2:15.35.
In the 100 IM, Korneva earned a 19th place finish with a time of 1:06.13 while Schlessman and
Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) went 7-8 in the A Final with times of 53.02 and 54.96. In the B Final,
Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) took the runner up spot with a time of 55.20 while
Nikita Ostapenko (Acton, ME) finished 15th in 56.97 and Antonovich earned a 17th place finish in 57.28. Thomas rounded things out with a C Final victory in 57.43.
Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) took the top spot for the Engineers in the 200 Fly with an eighth place, 2:01.69 finish while
Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) earned the B Final victory with a time of 1:57.43 and
Brian Hall (Westford, MA) took third in the B Final with a time of 2:01.12.
Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) earned 17th in 2:03.74 while
Patrick Tirch (Poughkeepsie, NY) brought home yet another C Final victory with a time of 2:03.02. On the women's side,
Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) finished 17th with a time of 2:18.09.
The 50 Breast rounded out the individual events at the meet as
Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH) brought home a fifth place, 30.74 finish followed by
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY) 13th place, 33.25 finish and
Alessandra Giovenco (Alexandria, VA) ended on a high note with a C Final victory in 35.64.
On the men's side,
Jack Duryea (Sag Harbor, NY) brought home a ninth place finish in 27.50 while
Bora Hurst (West Palm Beach, FL) earned a B Final win with a time of 27.81, Milligan brought home 16th in 28.28, Budde took 17th in 29.10 and
Jack Werb (Raynam, MA) finished 18th in 30.69.
The event ended with the 400 Free Relay where the foursome of DiMascolo, MacLod, Kang and
Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) took seventh with a time of 3:37.28 while the men's squad of Doubek, Schlessman, Greenfield and Tesoro closed out the meet with a second place, 3:04.49 finish, shaving six seconds off of the team's previous season best.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action in the new year when they return to the pool on Tuesday, January 14 at 2 pm in a tri meet with Bentley and Adelphi at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center.
