WORCESTER -- Select members of the WPI swimming and diving teams took part this weekend in the GNAC Championship meet held at WPI's Sports & Recreation Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Members of the Engineers were able to compete in morning preliminaries and would not advance to the evening's scoring finals.
Angus Zuwallack (Falmouth, MA) had a busy weekend for the Crimson and Gray, taking part in four individual events in his final career meet. The senior posted the second fastest morning time in the 200 backstroke (2:09.96), third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.70) and fourth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:06.67) in addition to clocking a 17:38.72 in the 1650 freestyle. Devin Mihaichuk (New Lenox, IL) also participated in four individual events, touching the wall with the second quickest time in the 200 butterfly (2:01.69), third in the 400 IM (4:33.00) fourth in the 50 butterfly (25.46) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (56.43).
Ryan Ng (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) had an impressive weekend. The freshman collected the personal best times while placing second in the 50 (22.44) and 100 freestyles (49.86) and was third in the 200 IM (2:09.56) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.36).
Patrick Tirch (Poughkeepsie, NY) tallied third place showings in the 100 (54.43) and 200 butterflies (2:04.23), fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:53.88) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (51.34).
Ian Green (Reading, MA) notched the fourth best time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.38), was fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.16), eighth in the 100 freestyle (51.58) and ninth in the 50 breaststroke (33.64).
Kyle Chang (Seal Beach, CA),
Owen Walpole (Westford, MA) and
Jack Werb (Raynham, MA) all also swam four individual events. Chang delivered the second best times in the 50 breaststroke (29.28) and 100 backstroke (58.69), sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.88) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (57.30). Walpole posted the fourth quickest times in the 200 freestyle (1:53.26) and 100 IM (1:01.02), fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:08.51) and reached the wall in a time of 18:11 in the 1650 freestyle. Werb complied the fifth fastest time in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.74) and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.50), 100 IM (1:03.55) and 50 breaststroke (30.09).
On the women's side
Taylor Walker (Townsend, MA) posted the 13th fastest time in the 100 freestyle (1:03.52), was 14th in the 50 freestyle (28.23) and 17th in the 100 IM (1:16.67).
A handful of WPI athletes used the weekend as final tune up for the NEWMAC Championships in three weeks.
Andrea Wu (Redmond, WA) was the fastest in the women's IM in a time of 1:04.01 and was second in the 50 freestyle, reaching the wall in 25.35 while
Alessandra Giovenco (Alexandria, VA) collected the fourth quickest time in the 200 IM (2:26.97).
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) was a strong showing in the men's one-meter diving, racking up 358.40 points.
WPI turns its attention next to the four-day NEWMAC Championships. Action begins on Thursday, February 22nd at 4pm and concludes on Sunday, February 25th at MIT.
