Middletown, CT ---
Caty Clements (Warwick, RI) and
Stefanie Stoj (Vernon, CT) netted goals as host Wesleyan blanked WPI 2-0 in a non-conference women soccer matchup Wednesday afternoon on Jackson Field.
The Cardinals remain undefeated at 2-0 in 2024 while the Engineers see their record level out at 2-2 on the season.
Wesleyan had the better of the play in the opening quarter hour and were rewarded for it with a penalty kick following a trip in the box in the 15th minute. Clements stepped up and buried the spot kick to her left at 14:54 for her first tally of the year. The guests began to find their footing late in the first half as
Lily Guiliano (North Salem, NY),
Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) and
Caila Scully (Merrimack NH), all registered shots in the last eight minutes of the stanza, with Johnson's and Scully's both on goal.
The hosts increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 59th minute when
Maria Utz (Atlanta, GA) hit
Stefanie Stoj (Vernon, CT) with a nifty pass and the junior went high to the left side for her first tally of the season at 58:45. WPI had a pair of second half shots on goal but both
Lottie McLeod's (Newton, MA) bid at 64:34 and
Madison Shaw's (Cheshire, CT) shot with 9:26 remaining were turned away by Cardinal netminder
Molly Brumbach (Montclair, NJ).
Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) played in goal for the Crimson and Gray and recorded four saves while Brumbach also made four stops on way to her sixth career clean sheet. Wesleyan outshot the Engineers 19-5 and held a 5-1 advantage in corners.
WPI travels down the road to face Worcester State on Saturday at 4pm. Wesleyan opens conference play this Saturday at Hamilton at 11am.
