Women’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with 1-0 Shutout of Salve Regina

WORCESTER -- Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) accounted for the only scoring of the match with a goal in the 29th minute and goalkeeper Maya Mussel (Oxford, CT) logged her first career complete game shutout to propel WPI to a 1-0 triumph over visiting Salve Regina in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup played Saturday afternoon on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

The victory moves WPI, fifth in the initial NCAA Division III Region II NPI ranks, to 8-3-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in conference play while the Seahawks slip to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC action.

Prior to the game, the Engineers honored their four seniors including Reese Pszenny (Danvers, MA), Fiona Prendergast (Sudbury, MA), Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD) and Delina Chávez (Glastonbury, CT).

WPI had the better of the action in the early going tallying four of the first five shots of the game and all four of the first half corners kicks, but the Seahawks nearly broke through in the 27th minute but Sara Wiejkus (Marshfield, MA) had a shot blocked and Olivia Tacconi's (Waldwick, NJ) rebound bid was corralled by Mussel.   Just over two minutes later WPI struck for the only goal of the day when Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, MA) sent a long ball in that pinned between a pair of Salve Regina defenders and collected by Adiletta, who knocked in her second goal of the season and fourth of her career at 28:54.

The Crimson and Gray turned to its defense to protect the lead after intermission and limited the Seahawks to just two second half shots, both that sailed high in the final seven minutes.

Mussel, who was making her first career start in net for the Engineers but had shared in WPI's first five shutouts after entering at the half, amassed three saves while improving to 4-0-1 on the year.  Emelia DaPonte (Marshfield, MA) recorded four stops in net for the Seahawks in the first half while Reagan Moffatt (Denville, NJ) turned away three shots for the visitors after halftime.

For the game WPI held a 15-6 advantage in shots and a 8-1 edge in corners. WPI's Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) was the only player to register more than two shots in the game as uncorked eight shots on the day.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Wednesday with home matches.  WPI hosts Wellesley at 6pm while Salve Regina welcomes Babson to Newport for a 3:30pm contest.
