Schenectady, NY ---
Reese Pszenny (Danvers, MA) and
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) connected on a goal in the 68th minute and a pair of goalies combined on a shutout as the WPI women's soccer squad kicked off the 2025 campaign with a 1-0 road victory at Union on Friday afternoon.
It marks the second straight season that the Engineers (1-0) blanked the Garnet Chargers 1-0 in the season debut.
The match was tight throughout with both teams posting seven shots, two each on frame. After a scoreless first half, the Crimson and Gray netted the only goal of the contest when Steckley delivered a cross into the box, where Pszenny one-touched it past the Union netminder for what proved to be the game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeepers
Ayla Verheul (Naarden, The Netherlands) and
Maya Mussel (Oxford, CT) split the game in net for the Engineers with Mussel logging both saves and earning her first career victory.
Maya Koster (Farmington, CT) recorded one save in goal for the hosts.
Pszenny, teammate
Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) and Union's
Anne Pearl (Plainville, MA) were the only players to record multiple shots on the day while the hosts earned five of the match's seven corner kicks.
WPI completes a season-opening weekend back-to-back on Saturday at 3pm at Western New England. Union returns to the field Tuesday with the middle match of a three-game homestand, all against NEWMAC opponents, when the Garnet Chargers host Smith at 5pm.
