Women’s Soccer Offense Shines in 3-0 Non-Conference Win over UMass Boston

WORCESTER --- Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) recorded the early marker in the first half before Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) and Madison Shaw (Cheshire, CT) added on goals in the second half accompanied by two Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) assists to secure the 3-0 win over UMass Boston at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Crimson and Gray improve to 5-2-2 overall as the Beacons slip to 4-3-1 on the season.

The Engineers showed off the boots early with shots by Steckley and Adiletta that were wide and saved before Adiletta dribbled into the box fending off a defender heading towards her left and then switched to a right foot strike past the keeper to the far side of the goal at 11:32 for her first goal of the season. UMass Boston's Lorelai Leddy (West Greenwich, RI) wasted no time attempting to level the match as she drove a low ball to the bottom right corner before being stopped by Ayla Verheul (Naarden, The Netherlands) just over a minute later.

WPI's Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, MA) fired a ball on target off a throw-in opportunity but was kept cleanly by Janiya Matier (North Easton, MA). Closing the first half of action was a through ball up to Reese Pszenny(Danvers, MA) who took a final shot at goal as time expired but was steered away to keep the match a 1-0 heading into the break.

Steckley, Adiletta and Johnson registered shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half before Johnson dribbled up the middle of the field and played a ball to Steckley tapped by her defender and then chipped in past the keeper to the bottom right corner for the second goal of the day in the 64th minute of play. Tealyn Boyle (Bethlehem, PA) took a strong shot at goal as a jumping and fully extended Maya Mussel (Oxford, CT) got her hands on the ball steering the shot away above the goal. Boyle followed up with header off a corner that hit the crossbar in addition to an Amanda Regan (Pepperell, MA) header that went wide. WPI's offensive attack stayed strong as Steckley and Johnson recorded back-to-back shots on frame that were kept clear by UMass Boston's Matier.

The Engineers brought the ball down to the opposite end of the pitch as Pszenny was able to get a header off but went wide. Delaney Mohl (Hopewell Junction, NY) carried the ball up the left side of the field before taking contact just inside the box leading to a penalty kick opportunity where the junior shot high on the attempt. In the final minutes of the contest, the Johnson played a ball back to an open Shaw who fired a shot into the top right corner from 15 yards out to record her first-career goal and close out the match as Johnson recorded her second assist on the day.

Verheul and Mussel split duties in between the pipes for the Engineers recording a save apiece in the combined shutout for the fifth occasion on the season. UMass Boston's Matier recorded seven saves on 10 shots faced on the afternoon.

WPI held the advantage in shots (17-5), shots on goal (10-2) as the visitors led in corner kick opportunities (3-2).

Both groups return to conference play as the Crimson and Gray hit the road to South Hadley to take on Mount Holyoke Saturday at 3pm as the Beacons will return home to host Keene State in a 2:30pm contest.
