Chris Robertson is the all-time winningest coach in the 135-year history of WPI Football, with 52 career victories heading into his 16th season. Since taking over in 2010, Robertson has built a championship-caliber culture rooted in excellence on the field, in the classroom, and throughout the community.
Robertson’s vision has been about building a championship culture at WPI. His program emphasizes accountability, effort, academic achievement, and leadership development. Under his guidance, the Engineers have become a consistent force in the NEWMAC and a model for what success looks like in Division III athletics.
In 2025, Robertson will look to secure WPI’s seventh winning season in the last 10 years, building on a strong returning core that includes multiple All-NEWMAC honorees. The 2024 squad finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, highlighted by wins over Worcester State, UNE, Norwich, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard, and MIT. Five players earned All-NEWMAC recognition, with standout safety Gavin Chieff earning All-New England, All-Region First Team, and D3football.com All-America Fourth Team honors.
Robertson’s teams have consistently delivered in rivalry matchups, notching multiple wins against regional foes such as Worcester State, Coast Guard, and Norwich — and producing over 25 All-Conference selections in the last four years alone.
Two of the defining seasons under Robertson include:
- 2019: A historic 10-1 season, featuring a share of the NEWMAC title and a victory over Western Connecticut in the New England Bowl Series — the third postseason appearance in program history, all under Robertson.
- 2017: A magical 9-2 season, capped by a seven-game winning streak and WPI’s first-ever postseason victory, a New England Bowl Championship that tied the school record for wins in a season.
Earlier seasons under Robertson featured dominant defensive units, nationally-ranked pass defenses, and marquee. His players have excelled across all levels, from Academic All-Americans to regional and national award winners. Robertson-coached teams have also led the NEWMAC in academic all-conference selections in multiple seasons.
Before returning to WPI in 2010, Robertson served as the first full-time head coach at Salve Regina University, where he engineered a major program turnaround, expanding the roster and improving on-field performance, while also achieving high academic success.
A defensive coach by trade, Robertson began his coaching career under Ed Zaloom at Siena before first arriving at WPI as defensive coordinator and head baseball coach. He holds the distinction of guiding WPI Baseball to its first postseason appearances in over a century of Engineer Baseball.
Robertson is a 1996 graduate of the University at Albany, where he was a three-year starter, captain, and two-time Academic All-American. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s in educational psychology.
He lives in Grafton, MA with his wife, Kristin, twins Jake and Danielle, daughter Molly, their black lab mix, Lola, and their yellow lab, Happy.
