Martineau's Fourth Quarter Goal Helps Field Hockey Topple Wheaton

Norton, MA -- Eve Martineau's (Greene, ME) fourth quarter tally was the only goal of the game as the WPI field hockey team went on the road Saturday and posted an important 1-0 victory at Wheaton in a NEWMAC contest played on the Nordin Turf Field.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Engineers and ups their record to 5-7 on the season and, more importantly, 4-2 in conference action.  Wheaton slips to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in NEWMAC play.

WPI had the better of the action, attempting 29 of the game's first 30 shots, but didn't dent the scoring column on its 29th and final shot midway through the final frame.  Martineau registered her first goal of 2023 and second of her career when she knocked home a feed from Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) with just 6:12 remaining in the game.

The Lyons ratcheted up the pressure in the final three minutes, taking three penalty corners and registering a pair of shots but the Crimson and Gray defense did not buckle, securing the Engineers their fourth NEWMAC victory of the season.

WPI goalkeeper Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) was credited with her third shutout of the year while Wheaton netminder Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, ME), was outstanding for the Lyons, notching 16 saves on the day.

The Engineers finished with a 29-4 edge in shots, including all 17 on target. Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) and Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) led the Boynton Hillers shot parade with nine and seven respectively while Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, ME) accounted for two of the Lyons' three shots.  The penalty corners were evenly distributed, with the visitors holding a slight 7-6 advantage.

WPI plays the first of two midweek home games on Tuesday, entertaining Smith at 7pm.  Wheaton closes out a three-game homestand the same night, squaring off with Springfield at 7pm.
