Newport, RI --- On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the WPI field hockey team needed an extra six minutes and 39 seconds to come away with a thrilling 2-1 OT victory over Salve Regina.
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) did not relent on the Engineers' OT penalty corner opportunity, desperate to end the game in favor of WPI. After her first shot was saved, she corralled the rejection and sent it back. After the next was stopped, she took the bounce back and tried one more time, beating the Salve Regina goalie for the game-winning score in the 67th minute of action.
With the victory, WPI improves to 7-8 on the year and 6-2 in conference action and, with just one NEWMAC date left, secures the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament for the Engineers, who will host a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday, October 31 versus an opponent to be determined at a time to be announced next weekend. Salve Regina, falls to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
WPI netminder Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) made 12 stops on the day, her second-straight game with 10+ saves and fifth such game of the year. Salve Regina's goalie Bryn Protheroe (Glastonbury, CT) needed to make 17 stops on the day, as WPI took 28 shots, 20 coming on goal. But was unable to make that 18th save, as the Engineers came away with the victory.
Salve Regina scored the first goal of the game in the first minute of action. Julia Decker (Newton, NJ) stole the ball from WPI who was in the midst of rotating to the strong side of the field and raced into the circle where she found Shannon Kennedy (Royersford, PA). Kennedy's initial shot was stopped by Moreau and nestled in her pads. But Kennedy freed the ball and dished it out to Elizabeth Clark (Franklin, MA) who sent it in for the score.
It took until the second quarter for WPI to even the score when Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) netted her seventh goal of the season with a little help from Dutson sent a long pass that was lifted from midfield down to the awaiting Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) who ticked a pass to Lang. Lang then streaked into the circle and drew the Salve Regina goalie out of position, wrapping a shot around her and into the net for the equalizer.
Despite a pair of shots from the Seahawks and a trio of penalty corners for the Engineers, the score remained even until the half.
In the second half, WPI took nine shots, three of them coming on goal and had a trio of penalty corner opportunities, but were unable to net another goal, sending the game into overtime.
The Engineers controlled all of the OT opportunities, and created five penalty corners which ultimately resulted in the game-winning goal from Dutson.
WPI will return to the field for its final non-conference game of the season, when it faces Keene State on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 4:30pm. The game will also serve as Senior Day as the Engineers honor their senior class. Salve Regina returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7pm.
