Men’s Soccer Shoots Past MIT in Mid-Week Road Conference Action

Cambridge, MA --- WPI men's soccer graduate students Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) and Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) notched two goals for the Crimson and Gray en route to a 2-0 road victory over MIT on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
With the win, WPI sports a four-game win streak and marks their 10th shutout of the 2023 season. The victory improves Boynton Hillers to 8-3-6 overall, and 6-1-1 in conference play, while MIT falls to 6-6-2, 4-2-1.
 
Franco Bazzini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) crossed a ball to Valagussa who hesitated to get by an MIT defender and before finding the back of the net for the first tally of the match in the 24th minute for his sixth marker of the 2023 stint.
 
In just 62 seconds into the second half, Valagussa dribbled up the left side of the field and played ball high that dropped down to Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) on the far side who knocked it in for his second goal of the year, extending the lead to two which marked the final result at Roberts Field. 
 
The Crimson and Gray compiled for 11 shots on the afternoon five coming from Valagussa and Savoie as the remaining six came from six different players. For the hosting Engineers, Dilin Meloni (Needham, MA) racked up five shots as Garrett Robinson (Winfield, IL) tacked on three more as MIT finished the game with a 12-11 edge in shots as corner kick opportunities were in favor of MIT, 7-2. WPI recorded a 7-5 advantage in shots on frame.
 
 In between the pipes, Ryan Martin (Douglas, MA) registered five saves for the Crimson and Gray. Hernando Ardila (Miramar, FL) started in net for MIT acquiring one save. Paolo Mangiafico (Farmington, CT) came into goal at time 54:05 and added on four saves for the homestanding Engineers. 

Today's regular season finale victory establishes a 10-game unbeaten streak for WPI (7-0-3) dating back to September 19th in a 1-0 road loss at Amherst. Additionally, with a tie between Babson and Clark this afternoon, the Crimson and Gray have moved into the league's top spot with a 6-1-1 conference record.  

WPI will take a break as the Boynton Hillers secured a home contest in the 2023 NEWMAC Tournament starting next Tuesday with a time and opponent to be announced. MIT will be back in action next Tuesday at time TBA for the NEWMAC First Round.
