Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Guiliano Registers a Brace as Women's Soccer Nabs NEWMAC Tournament Berth Following Shutout at MHC

South Hadley, MA --- In the team's final regular season game of the 2023 season, the WPI women's soccer squad finished with a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke Saturday afternoon.  The victory assured the Crimson and Gray's return to the NEWMAC Tournament after a one-year absence as the Engineers secured the seventh seeded in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.

Lily Guiliano (North Salem, NY) picked up her first career multi-goal game in the victory while Lottie McLeod (Newton, MA) picked up her second multi-assist game of the season and her career.

The Engineers finish the regular season with a 7-7-4 overall record, 3-4-4 in NEWMAC play.  WPI began the day in a tie for the final spot in the eight-team conference postseason tournament, but the three points with the win catapulted the Boynton Hillers into a tie for sixth place with Coast Guard 13 points.  The two teams tied in their head-to-head meeting but the Bears held the tiebreaker due to a victory over third-seeded Emerson.  The Crimson and Gray will be seeded seventh and will venture to second-seeded Babson for a quarterfinal contest Tuesday afternoon at a time to be announced later this weekend.

The Lyons end their 2023 campaign with a 3-12-2 record, 1-10 in conference action.

WPI got on the board first in the 19th minute of action. After Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) sent a long shot at the goal from the far right corner, the initial shot was blocked and then corralled by McLeod on the opposite side of the field. McLeod drew the goalie out of the net and dished a pass to an awaiting Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) who netted her third goal of the season for the 1-0 advantage.

Guiliano made it a 2-0 game before the half with a goal in the 30th minute of action. McLeod was once again in on the action with her second assist of the game. This goal was started on the Mount Holyoke side of the field as the Engineers swiftly and deftly moved the ball down on to their offensive half. A long pass found the foot of McLeod who then, once again, found her teammate in the box for the score.

It took until late in the second half, but Guiliano got herself another goal, this time in the 75th minute of play marking her first career multi-goal effort. A long cross from near-midfield from Jess English (Ledyard, CT) found the foot of Guiliano in front of the goal and her deflection beat the Lyon netminder Evie Krieg (Frisco, TX) to the left for the score and 3-0 advantage.

Krieg and Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, NJ) teamed up for Mount Holyoke in net on the day. Breen started the game allowing two goals and making two saves in the first half. While Krieg finished the second half with one goal allowed and five saves.

Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) picked up the clean sheet for the Engineers, saving the lone shot she faced on the day, marking her sixth shutout of the season.
