WORCESTER -- The WPI wrestling team used two straight tech falls and then three consecutive pins to defeat visiting Norwich 35-16 in the Engineers dual meet and home opener inside the Sports & Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Crimson and Gray jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage. In a match of regionally-ranked grapplers at 125 pounds, WPI's
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ), No. 6 in the NEWA posted a 14-4 decision over the seventh-ranked wrestler. Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) then posted the only win by decision in the meet's 10 bouts, an 8-6 victory at 133.

The Cadets then broke up the shutout as
Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, NJ), ranked third in NEWMAC at 141 pounds, wrapped up a high-scoring 27-12 tech fall at the final buzzer.

The hosts then rattled a pair of tech falls of their own.
 Connor Doran (Gales Ferry, CT) got the spurt started with 19-1 second period tech fall (3:57) at 149 pounds before
Zachary Rioux (Nashua, NH) claimed a 16-1 tech fall of his own with just 13 seconds remaining in his bout at 157.

Joshua Ducharme (Tyngsboro. MA) got Norwich back on the board, and cut the Engineers edge to 17-10, with a 16-1 tech fall (5:31) of his own at 165 pounds before the Engineers tallied three straight falls to put the contest away.Â
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) began the pin parade at 174 with a fall at 4:35, before
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) pinned the eighth-ranked wrestler at 184 with two seconds remaining in the second period.Â
Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) closed the string with a fall just 42 seconds into his bout at 197. Â

Norwich closed the match on a high note as third-ranked heavyweight
Mason Sprinkel (Bel Air, MD) collected a pin at 1:57 to make the final score 35-16. Â

Both squads are off until tournament action on Saturday, December 2nd. WPI (1-0) heads to Gorham, ME to take part in the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine while Norwich (0-2) ventures to Rochester, NY to participate in the RIT Invitational.
