Field Hockey Clipped by No. 20 MIT 4-1 in NEWMAC Semifinals

Cambridge, MA --- The WPI field hockey team wrapped up its 2023 campaign falling for the second-straight season in the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals to No. 20 MIT on Thursday evening.

The Worcester-based Engineers dropped a 4-1 match to the Cambridge-based Engineers (14-4) to finish the 2023 season with a 10-9 record reaching the NEWMAC Semifinal round game for the fourth-straight season.

MIT got on the board quickly in the first quarter of action when Liberty Ladd (Cornelia, GA) netted her 10th goal of the season in the fourth minute of action. Ladd was able to sneak the ball past the WPI netminder Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) after a quick pass from Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, CA) to make it a 1-0 game.

MIT added to its total in the fourth quarter when, in the 54th minute of action, Ladd netted her second score of the game. Ladd bested everyone after a scramble in front of the cage and chucked a shot into the goal for the insurance score for MIT.

WPI got on the board 94 seconds later when Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) netted her sixth goal of the season after Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) put the first ball on frame leading to a scramble in front of the cage and a tip-in goal for the sophomore forward and put the Engineers on the board marking a one-goal deficit with five minutes remaining in the final quarter of play.

MIT would pile on the goals in the final minutes of action as WPI pulled its goalie in favor of an extra attacker as Oppenheim added a score at the end of the 56th minute and Ladd completed the hat trick with an empty netter in the 59th minute of play.

Moreau was tested all day making 13 saves in 55 minutes of action and allowing a pair of goals while facing 20 shots on the day. MIT goaltender Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, MD) tallied six saves and one goal against on the evening.

MIT was able to draw 13 corners in the game to WPI's four, resulting in 17 shots on net to WPI's eight.
