Hoboken, NJ ---
Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) registered 19 points and
Jack Bleier (Victor, NY) amassed a career-best 13 points to lift WPI past Amherst 79-56 in the consolation game of the Stevens (NJ) Holiday Tournament in Canavan Arena.
WPI, ranked 16th in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25, moved to 9-2 on the season while Amherst slips to 7-5 overall.
The Engineer bench played a big role in Saturday's win, outscoring the Mammoths reserves by a 39-22 margin. In addition to Bleier's career day,
Tim Reidy (Needham, MA) chipped in with nine points,
JT Veiking (Mansfield, MA) added eight and
Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH) and
Nathan Bledsoe (San Antonio, Texas) finished with five and four respectively. The quintet all accounted for at least one 3-pointer and finished a combined 8-for-15 from downtown.
A day after only mustering 38 points in an opening round loss to Gettysburg (PA), the Crimson and Gray found themselves down 6-0 as Amherst drained their first three shots of the afternoon. WPI however regrouped and accounted for 15 of the next 16 points to grab an advantage it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Trifectas were the cause of the spurt as
Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA), Reidy, Sevilla and Veiking all buried 3-pointers during the uprising. The Engineers led by as many as 20 in the opening half and took a 41-25 advantage into the cloakroom at intermission.
Amherst again hit three straight shots, this time to claw back to nine at 58-49 following an 8-0 run about midway through the second half but WPI quickly regrouped by scoring the next 16 points to swell the lead to 25 at 74-49 with just 3:10 to go. Sevilla and Veiking spearheaded the rally with five points each and Callahan tossed in four during the spurt in which the Mammoths went 0-for-7 from the floor with two turnovers.
Sevilla and
John Adams (Douglas, MA), who battled foul trouble all day, both grabbed seven boards for the Engineers while Callahan stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds, six assists, a pair of steals and a block. As a team, WPI enjoyed a 42-26 edge on the glass.
Amherst's
Charlie Randall (Larchmont, NY) shared game-high scoring honors with 19 points while
Bobby Sommers (Southboro, MA) tossed in 12 and
Ryker Vance (Naples, FL) 10.
Will Scherer (Darnestown, MD) paced all players by hauling in eight rebounds of the afternoon.
WPI returns to NEWMAC play on Wednesday, venturing to Coast Guard for a 3pm tipoff. Amherst hosts Little Three rival Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7pm.
