Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) and
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) and collected a goal and an assist as the WPI field hockey extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Worcester State in a non-conference matchup between the two Worcester schools on Thursday on H. Carr Field.
The Engineers improve to 3-5 on the season while the Lancers saw their modest two-game win streak snapped and dip to 4-5 overall.
Less than two minutes in, Powers got past the WSU defense and was taken down inside the circle resulting in a penalty stroke for the hosts. Dutson stepped up and tallied her third goal of the season and 26th of her career to put the Crimson and Gray ahead 1:44 into play. It highlighted a first quarter that saw the hosts attempt all of the stanza's six shots and two penalty corners.
After a defensive minded middle two corners that just five shots total between the two squads, the Engineers flexed their muscles in the fourth quarter by taking 13 of the frame's 14 shots. Dutson and Powers connected 3:30 into the final quarter as Dutson emerged from a scrum in front of the Lancer net to send a pass across the crease to Powers on the left side, who banged in her third goal of 2023 and 12th of her career. Just 4:04 later WPI closed out the scoring when Powers sent a flashy behind-the-back pass to
Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) on the left post who pocketed her team-leading fourth goal of the season and 11th of her career.

Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA), her Worcester State counterpart, was credited 5 saves on the night.
For the game, the Engineers held a 21-4 edge in shots and 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Grace Adams (Leominster, MA) was an offensive stalwart for the Lancers, attempting all four of WSU's shots.
WPI closes out a brief two-game homestand on Saturday, wrapping up Homecoming activities with a 7pm NEWMAC tilt against Springfield. Worcester State is home Saturday as well, tangling with MASCAC foe Framingham State at 3pm.
