Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at Coast Guard

WORCESTER -- The WPI volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road at NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. The Bears came out on top with set scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-14, to move to 12-4 overall, 2-2 in conference play. WPI falls to 4-9, 1-3 in NEWMAC matches.

WPI saw a double-double from Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) with 10 kills, a team-high 12 digs, and seven assists. Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) and Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) each tallied five kills, with Eldridge adding nine digs and 13 assists. Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) rounded out the Engineers' box score with 11 digs.

Shannon Shaw (Torrance, CA) and Allie Wildsmith (Bainbridge Island, WA) led the Coast Guard offense with Shaw notching nine kills, hitting .500, and Wildsmith recording eight kills while hitting .583. Maeve Duffin (Hawthorne, NJ) had 17 assists and four aces, while Mackenzie Murnane (Castle Hayne, NC) added 15 assists. Kaela France (Ellicott Calhan, CO) led all players with 17 digs.

Coast Guard hit no lower than .242 in each frame and used an effective service game to keep the WPI offense off-balance.

In the first set, The Engineers had an early 7-4 advantage, but the Bears used a 9-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. WPI closed the gap to three points on the next serve, but six unanswered from Coast Guard made it 19-10. One last push with a 6-1 run from WPI made it a four-point match (22-18), but the Bears closed out the set with a kill from Elizabeth Atkinson (Brookline, NH) to take it 25-20.

Coast Guard's momentum continued to the second set, as the hosts opened with a 7-2 advantage. Three straight WPI kills cut it to 7-5, but the Bears rattled off a 7-0 run to make it 14-5. The Engineers again surged, this time with a 6-1 run to close the gap to 15-11, but Coast Guard scored 10 of the next 13 points to win it 25-14 for a 2-0 match lead.

The third and final frame saw the Bears again take an early lead with an 11-2 advantage out of the gate. Coast Guard led by as many as 15-3 and aside from a late 5-1 run from WPI to close it to 23-14, the Bears rolled on. The hosts finished up the sweep with a 25-14 result in the final frame.

WPI has a non-conference clash on Tuesday at home at 7pm against Salve Regina, while Coast Guard also plays Tuesday, heading to Wellesley for a 7pm start.
