Weston, MA --- The WPI volleyball team survived a marathon five-set match to pick up a 3-2 win on the road at Regis on Tuesday night. The Engineers parlayed a triple-double from
Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) into a 17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 16-25, 15-7 victory to even their season mark to 2-2. The Pride also moved to 2-2 with the result.
Reynolds was stellar all over the court, recording a career-high 12 kills with 23 assists and 17 digs in her first match of the season. She also notched two blocks and two aces on the night. The triple-double is the second of her career for Reynolds, who also notched an 11-kill, 12-dig, 20-assist, effort on September 20, 2022.
Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) hit .480 on the night, finishing with 15 kills, while
Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) notched a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) led WPI with 23 assists, adding three aces and six digs, while
Audrey Stroupe (Leesburg, VA) also aided the offense with eight kills.
Defensively for WPI,
Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) led all players with 24 digs, while
Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) added 10 in the winning effort.
For Regis,
Avery Mola (Chesire, CT) led the team with 13 kills, while
Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, CA) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, MA) also doubled up with 36 assists and 10 digs, while
Emily Hart (Meriden, CT) led the Pride with 19 digs.
Regis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, using a solid .258 attack to win set one 25-17. Trailing 10-5, WPI battled back to get the score to within two at 12-10, but the Pride used an 8-3 run late in the frame to cement the victory.
WPI answered with an impressive 19 kills in the second set, hitting .350 to tie the match at 1-1. Neither team was able to grab momentum early with the set landing on a 13-13 tie midway through the action. From there, the Engineers took over, closing out the set with a 12-7 surge, with nine kills down the stretch.
WPI continued its hot-hitting into the third set, using a stout .455 attack in the 25-13 win to go up 2-1. The Engineers scored the first four points of the set and never trailed, as Hudson and Deckers each piled on five kills in the frame.
A tight set four, saw Regis use a late run to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-16 victory. After four early ties, the hosts took over. Leading by two, the Pride rattled off a 7-2 run to take control and close out the set.
WPI grabbed a 15-7 win in the fifth and deciding frame to close out the match Regis opened with a 4-1 advantage, before six-straight points from WPI put the visitors up, 7-4. After a service error gave Regis a point, the Engineers continued to roll to another 6-0 run, going up 13-5. Regis had back-to-back points to make it 13-7, but a Hudson kill and a Pride attack error gave WPI the five-set victory.
Up next, WPI will play a pair of matches at Brandeis on Saturday, taking on the Judges at noon and Williams at 2pm. Regis plays host to Plymouth State on Thursday night at 7pm.
