New London, CT -- The WPI wrestling team began a busy weekend Friday evening with a 40-9 loss on the road to nationally-ranked Coast Guard. The Engineers slip to 2-2 overall while the Bears, ranked 13th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Dual Meet Top 25, are now 1-1 on the season.
Full results have not been made available from the hosts at press time however the Crimson and Gray received victories from 125-pounder
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) and
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) at 184 pounds.
Thatcher, ranked fourth in the most recent New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rankings, used a first period takedown and a riding time bonus point to take a 3-0 victory in the night's first official bout. The junior is now 16-2 on the season.
Tully found himself down 7-4 heading to the third period but quickly notched an escape and a takedown and parlayed that into a pin with 1:34 remaining in the bout.
WPI has a quick turnaround, heading to Johnson & Wales tomorrow for an 11am tri-match with Roger Williams, Trinity and the host Wildcats. Coast Guard is also in action Saturday, venturing to Henniker, NH for a tri-match at New England College with Norwich.
