Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA) stepped up two weight classes to help the Engineers defeat Trinity in action on Saturday at the Johnson & Wales quadrangular meet.
The Engineers captured four straight matches late in a thrilling 25-22 triumph of the Bantams before falling 55-0 to the No. 5 hosts and 38-10 to Roger Williams.
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) got WPI off on the right foot versus Trinity with a decision in a bout of regionally-ranked 125-pounders. Thatcher, ranked fourth in the most recent New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rankings, bested the sixth-ranked wrestler 9-5 to put the Engineers ahead 3-0.
Trinity surged ahead 16-3 with three straight wins, including a forfeit at 133 pounds and tech falls and 141 and 149, before WPI answered back with five straight victories to earn the team win.
Zachary Rioux (Nashua, NH) got the Crimson and Gray on the win track with a pin midway through the third period in his bout at 157 pounds before
Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) matched him with a first period fall at 165.
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) got the momentum going for the Engineers with a high-scoring 15-8 win at 174 pounds and was followed by an impressive 10-0 major decision shutout from
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) at 184. With WPI holding a 22-16 edge with just two bouts remaining, the Engineers sent out Addeche, typically a 174-pounder, at 197 pounds. The sophomore found himself down 3-2 in the third period but turned that result around and secured the victory for the Crimson and Gray with four-third period points to win 6-3.
A trio of Engineers delivered their second win of the day in the matchup with Roger Williams. Thatcher collected a 12-3 major decision at 125 pounds, Edmondson grinded out a 4-1 decision at 174 and Tully posted a 7-4 victory at 184.
WPI is back in action a week from Sunday at the NEWA Duals hosted at Johnson & Wales. Wrestling is scheduled to start at 9:30am with seedings and bracket release slated to be unveiled during the week.
