Norton, MA --- The WPI men's track and field squad recorded a second-place team finish at Wheaton College's Lyon Invitational on Saturday.
Highlighting the meet for the Engineers, senior
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) set a new program record in the 300-meter run. He secured a victory with a time of 35.89 to best the previous school mark of 35.92 set by
Alex Rus '20 in 2020.
In the final standings, the Engineers tallied 164 team points to finish behind only Bridgewater State's 177.50. Colby was third with 96 points, while UMass Dartmouth (56) and Wheaton (51) rounded out the top five.
In the 3k race, WPI runners occupied the top five spots, led by a victory from senior
Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) in 8:38.49 and a runner-up finish from graduate student
David Reynolds (Andover, NH) in 8:41.76. Sophomore
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) and
Jarrett Gulden (Walpole, ME) were third and fourth in 8:54.88 and 9:07.47, respectively, while
Connor Gaudette (Holden, MA) was fifth in 9:17.67.
Sophomores
Dylan Serreyn (Windom, MN) and
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) finished 1-2 in the triple jump, each recording New England Division III marks. Serreyn won in 13.31m, while Gerlach was second with a 13.02m effort.
Freshman
Daniel Kim (Orange, CT) and senior
Matthew Lacadie (Milford, CT) took third and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, with Kim going 8.76 and Lacadie, 8.78.
In the high jump, both Gerlach and junior
Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) notched postseason qualifying standards. Gerlach was second with a jump of 1.90m and Catuccio was third, also going 1.90m.
Sophomore
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) and junior
William Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) both hit postseason standards in the pole vault. Fleck took third at 4.25m and Pagliarulo was fourth with a similar 4.25m. Senior
Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY) was fifth in the event with a leap of 4.00m.
Rounding out the top-five individual finishes were sophomore
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) and freshmen
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) and
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA). Skerry took second overall in the mile run, recording a time of 4:28.64, while Zuo tallied a third-place finish in the shot put with a 13.34m effort. Manteria also excelled in his collegiate debut, taking fourth overall in the 60-meter dash in 7.13.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Kim, senior
Jack Robertson (Uxbridge, MA), and freshmen
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) and
Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA), placed second overall with a 3:32.47, just .10 off the win.
To close out the team victory, the 4x200-meter relay team of Lacadie, sophomore
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), freshman
Ajay Bellamy (Startford, CT), and Andrew went 1:35.67 to place second.
WPI is back in action on Saturday, January 20 at the URI Invitational.
