Adams Celebrates Senior Day with Double-Double as Men’s Basketball Dispatches Coast Guard

WORCESTER -- John Adams (Douglas, MA) amassed a team-high 20 points and corralled a game-best 15 rebounds en route to his 10th double-double of the season and 32nd of his career to propel WPI to its sixth straight triumph as the host Engineers defeated Coast Guard 74-67 in a NEWMAC men's basketball contest played Saturday afternoon inside historic Harrington Auditorium.

WPI, which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, ups it record to 17-3 on the season and 10-1 in conference play, while Coast Guard falls to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in NEWMAC action.

Prior to the game, the men's basketball program honored seniors Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA), Adams and Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, NH) in addition to Josh Janz (Lincoln, RI), one of the team's managers.

The Engineers opened with a well-balanced and selfless offense, as five assists helped seven players score in the first 10 minutes. An early 10-2 run put WPI up 22-9 as the Engineers went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and swiped two steals on defense. An 11-0 run by Coast Guard brought them back within two points, with Ben Yagley (Highlands Ranch, CO) scoring six points, as the Bears shot 3-of-4 from behind the arc in their run. A Yagey layup with just over three minutes left in the half gave Coast Guard a 25-24 lead, but WPI closed the half on an 11-3 run, shooting 4-of-4, with Sevilla dropping five points. Adams finished the half with eight points and eight rebounds, just shy of a first-half double-double.

A 7-2 second-half run for the Bears brought them within four, but an Adams layup and a Tim Reidy (Needham, MA) three put the Engineers back up nine. Mitch Shettles (New Albany, MS) dropped 3-pointers on three straight possessions to close the WPI lead to two. A Declan Rooney (Seattle, WA) and-one on a goaltending call cut the lead to one as the Bears continued their steady comeback. The two teams played a tight game the rest of the way, with WPI maintaining their narrow lead and icing the game with a pair of free throws by Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) to finish with a 74-67 victory.

Adams led the way for the Engineers with a 20-point double-double, finishing with a game-high 15 rebounds. Callahan scored 17 points on the afternoon, including 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Reidy had an efficient performance, with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc in just 18 minutes of play. Sevilla finished with 10 points and five boards, along with three assists and two steals. The Engineers finished with 35 rebounds, outrebounding the Bears by 10.   Adams' performance helped the Crimson and Gray outscore Coast Guard 36-20 in the paint for the game.

Coast Guard was led by a 21-point performance off the bench by Shettles who was 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from deep. Yagey finished with 15 points on the afternoon on 6-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, to go with two steals. Rooney had a team-high seven rebounds and three steals, breaking double-digits with 10 points. Cameron Brown (Ellicott, City, MD) finished with six points and four rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. Coast Guard shot an impressive 44% from three-point range, 11-of-25 for the game.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Saturday.  WPI heads to Boston for a 7pm appointment with Emerson while Coast Guard entertains conference co-leader Clark at 5:30pm.
