Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw vs Smith on Senior Day

WORCESTER --- WPI women's soccer played NEWMAC foe Smith to a scoreless result on Senior Day this Saturday at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

With the result, WPI now stands at 5-2-4 overall and 2-0-2 in NEWMAC action as the visiting Pioneers sit at 2-7-1 and 1-1-1 in conference play.

Prior to today's contest, the Engineers celebrated the seniors of the women's soccer program including Mia Gilmore (Canton, MA), Josephine Conlon (Hoboken, NJ), Lexi Carim (Wallingford, CT), Lottie McLeod (Newton, MA), Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO), Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH), Lily Guiliano (North Salem, NY), Julia Karman (Northport, NY) and Julia Colucci (Lynnfield, MA).

The Engineers had the first quality look of the afternoon from a Bagby corner kick and connect with Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) for a header but was kept away by Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA) to keep the Crimson and Gray off the board. First-year Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) then capped off the first half of play for the second Engineer strike but was saved by Smith's Smith.

In the second half, both teams posted strong defensive outings as Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) shut down all five shots faced as Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD) and McLeod led charges to take the lead in the second half but were once again turned away by the Pioneers' netminder as Toolin and Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) posted the final push with shots on frame in the 86th and 90th minute respectively but could get by to the back of the net.

Despite 12 different Engineers recording shots on the afternoon and outshooting the visitors 15-8 overall and 6-5 shots on target, the match concluded at a 0-0 deadlock recording shutouts for both Smith and Hellerman. The Saturday result marks the third shutout of season for the grad student goalie.

WPI will return to Worcester and enjoy a week away from action before heading to city-foe Clark for a tilt next Saturday at 1pm. Smith will return to Worcester for a midweek contest versus Clark on Wednesday night at 7pm.
