Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Setback on the Road at Wellesley

WORCESTER -- Wellesley volleyball secured a spot in next week's NEWMAC Tournament by sweeping visiting WPI in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-8) conference  match at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
 
The Blue (12-8 overall, 5-5 NEWMAC) hit .414 with 48 kills in three sets. Sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, CA) produced 15 kills with a .500 hitting percentage while classmate Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, CA) had a 12 kill, 10 dig double-double in addition to six aces. First year Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, MN) stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills, 23 assists, and five digs. Senior Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) finished with a .417 hitting percentage and six kills.
 
Junior Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) and first year Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) both registered nine digs for the Engineers (7-18 Overall, 0-10 NEWMAC). Jerebker and senior Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) both supplied eight assists.  Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) and Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) each amassed four kills.
 
The Blue smashed 16 kills with a .593 hitting percentage in the opening frame. After winning the first four points of the match, the Blue went on an 11-4 run. WPI never got back within eight in the set, as back-to-back kills from Hill closed out a 25-9 stanza.
 
The Engineers went up 7-3 in the second before Wellesley evened the set up at 9-9. The Blue never trailed after 10-10, concluding the frame with seven consecutive points, including four kills.
 
After exchanging the first two points, Wellesley rattled off 16 unanswered points in the third set. The 25-8 stanza featured 15 Blue kills and a .367 hitting percentage. In addition to the 48 kills, Wellesley finished the contest with 11 aces.
 
WPI will close out the season on Saturday, traveling to Norton for a 11am match at Wheaton.  Wellesley will conclude the regular season the same day, venturing to South Hadley to face Mount Holyoke at 11am.
