Boston, MA --- Four WPI school records were surpassed, as the Engineers men's track and field team took eighth overall at the New England Division III Championships on Saturday. The Crimson and Gray compiled 36.33 team points, ending the day with four school records and eight All-NED3 awards.
Graduate student
David Reynolds (Andover, NH) continued his fantastic season, by taking second in a tight finish in the 5,000m event. He lowered his own school record by almost 10 seconds, finishing in 14:28.94.
Sophomore
Gavin Fleck (Bend. OR) etched his name into the WPI record book with a third-place finish in the pole vault. He went 4.89m to top the previous school mark of 4.85m owned by Johann Bradley '21. Fleck's mark is also tied for 14th in all of NCAA Division III competition so far this season.
Sophomore
Dylan Serreyn (Windom, MN) continued the barrage of school-record performances, in a third-place finish in the triple jump. His distance of 14.01m smashed the old mark by over half a foot, as he surpassed Shaun Price's 13.73m from 2009.
Senior
Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) added another WPI school record, going 8.23.48 in the 3,000m event. He finished ninth overall, narrowly missing an All-NED3 honor. Bissoondial topped teammate David Reynold's previous best of 8:28.11 set last season.
In the high jump, two more Engineers nabbed All-NED3 honors. Sophomore
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) finished fifth overall, going 1.92m, while junior
Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) was eighth in 1.87m.
Sophomore
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) ran a huge personal best time in the 800m, where he finished fifth overall. His time of 1:53.01 earned him All-NED3 distinction.
Closing out the individual honors, senior
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) also earned All-NED3 honors, taking eighth place (22.05) in the 200m dash.
The men's 4x800m relay team then wrapped up the event with another All-NED3 performance for the Engineers. Wyche, senior
Jarrett Gulden (Walpole, ME), Bissoondial, and sophomore
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) combined to run a 7:56.32 to finish fifth overall.
Up next for WPI, qualified student-athletes will compete at the All-New England Championships in Boston on Saturday, March 2. Select Engineers may also compete at the Tufts Qualifier on the same day.
