Gray and Peregrim Pitch Well in Baseball's Monday Matinee at Johnson & Wales

Providence, RI --- Johnson & Wales starter Max Randazzo (Bryn Mawr, PA) tossed seven shutout innings, as the Wildcats notched a 3-0 victory over the WPI baseball team on Monday afternoon in Providence. The win improves JWU to 9-5, while the Engineers fall to 10-4.

Randazzo and reliever Garrett Fusco (Windsor, CT) held WPI to just two hits in the game, as Randazzo tossed the first seven, allowing one hit with nine strikeouts and six walks. Fusco pitched two scoreless innings, giving up one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

Trevor Juan (Bolton, CT) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Owen Davis (Bristol, CT) and Ryan St. Jean (Bolton, CT) each drove in runs for the hosts. Xavier Botelho (Rehoboth, MA) added two hits in the win.

WPI's offense was limited to singles from Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) and Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY). Andrew Gray (Millersville, MD) had a solid start, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Joseph Peregrim (Watervliet, NY) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits while striking out a pair.

The Wildcats scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth, which was all they'd need. In the fourth, Juan singled and was advanced to third with two outs. An RBI groundout from Davis sent the first run home, while a St. Jean double plated a Botelho single to make it 2-0 hosts. In the fifth, Juan singled home an insurance run, driving in an earlier single from Jack Magane (Walpole, MA) that made it 3-0.

WPI threatened in both the top of the third and eighth innings, loading the bases with two outs in both frames. In the third, walks to Nicholas Battaglino (Marlboro, MA), Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY), and DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) put three on, but Randazzo induced a ground ball to end the inning.

In the eighth, Hand was hit by a pitch, Cash singled, and Zawacki walked with two outs. However, Fusco got the final WPI batter of the frame to fly out to right field to end the threat.

WPI is back in action on Tuesday, beginning NEWMAC play with a 3:30pm tilt against Wheaton at the New England Baseball Complex. Johnson & Wales next hosts RIC on Tuesday at 4pm.
