North Dartmouth, MA --- Six Engineers took home individual titles as the men's track and field team won the 2024 Corsair Classic hosted by UMass Dartmouth. The event marked the first full-team action for the outdoor season.
WPI picked up 164 total points to place on top of 10 scoring teams. Bridgewater State was second with 112.5 points, while Eastern Connecticut State finished third with 108 points.
Fresh off an All-American performance in the pole vault, sophomore
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) set a new outdoor school record in the event. His mark now stands at 4.92m (16-1.75), breaking the mark of 15-9.25 set by Kyle Morette '12 in 2010.
Fleck led a strong team of five scorers in the event, going 1-2-3 with junior
William Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) taking second (4.10m) and freshman
Ajay Bellamy (Stratford, CT) taking third (3.95m). Senior
Chris Nguyen (Tewksbury, MA) nabbed sixth place (3.80m), while senior
Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY) was eighth (3.50m).
Sophomore
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) and junior
Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) went 1-2 in the high jump, with Gerlach going 1.90m and Catuccio, 1.85m. In the triple jump, sophomore
Dylan Serreyn (Windom, MN) took home the win with a leap of 13.97m, while Gerlach was third, going 13.09m.
Sophomore
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) highlighted four WPI scorers in the 1500m run, taking the title by running a 4:04.17, while senior
Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) was second in 4:05.63. Junior
Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) was sixth in the event in 4:11.26, while freshman
Trip Williams (Pelham, NH) was eighth in 4:13.50.
In the 800m event, five Engineers tallied podium finishes, led by a win from sophomore
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) who took the title in 1:57.71. Sophomore
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) was second in 1:58.36, while junior
Brendan May (Rutland, MA) was fourth (2:02.69) and freshman
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) was fifth (2:03.18). Senior
Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH) wrapped up the scorers in seventh place in 2:05.44.
Wrapping up the event winners was senior
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) in the 200m dash. He went 21.85 to take the title, while freshman
Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA) took sixth in 22.66.
Boybeyi also led three WPI scorers in the 400m dash, taking third place in 51.51. Freshman
Russell Hertel (Westminster, MA) took seventh in the event in 52.82, while sophomore
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) was eighth in 53.08.
In the 10,000m, senior
Connor Gaudette (Holden, MA) was third in 34:01.23, while sophomore
Zachary Shord (Laurel, MD) took fifth in 35:41.21.
Rounding out the individual scorers, freshman
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) was fourth in the shot put (12.74m), freshman
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) was seventh in the 100m dash (11.25), and junior
Michael Neff (West Hartford, CT) was eighth in the javelin (49.15m).
In the 4x100m relay, WPI took second overall, going 42.83, just .06 behind Springfield. The foursome included senior
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Boybeyi, freshman
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA), and sophomore
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA).
Wrapping up the meet, the 4x400 meter relay squad took eighth place (3:41.50) and it was made up of freshman
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT), sophomore
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT), senior
Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH), and junior
Brendan May (Rutland, MA).
WPI returns to the track on Saturday, April 6 at the Springfield College Classic with the action beginning at 11am.
