WORCESTER -- All three of WPI men's rowing's three varsity eights boats placed second and the varsity four captured its race as the Crimson and Gray rowed through a gusty cross headwind on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday morning.
The Engineers varsity eight, ranked fourth in the latest IRCA/IRA Men's Division III Top 15, jumped out to a lead in its race but fifth-ranked Bates took the lead in the third 500 meters and reached the finish line in 6:24.8, besting WPI by 3.37 seconds as the Boynton Hillers clocked a 6:28.17. Seventh-ranked Hamilton placed third in 6:32.40, RIT, which is receiving votes, was fourth finishing in 6:48.65, while Washington College (6:53.78) finished fifth.
The Bobcats continued their winning ways in the second varsity eight, collecting the biggest margin of victory in the trio of eights races. Bates turned in a time of 6:27.40 while the Crimson and Gray (6:35.30) was second, RIT (6:47.31) third and Hamilton (6:55.61).
Bates completed the sweep of eights with a narrow 3.2 second victory over the hosts. The Bobcats clocked a time of 6:35.23 to best WPI (6:38.43) while RIT placed third in 6:48.05.
The Engineers tasted victory in the varsity four, traveling down the 2000 meter course in a time of 7:46.00. The Crimson and Gray bested Washington College (7:57.77) by nearly 12 seconds and significantly ahead of third place Bates (8:54.57).
WPI returns to the water of Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, competing against Colby, Ithaca, Trinity beginning around 9:10am.
