Northampton, MA --- For the second time in three days it was another doubleheader sweep for the WPI softball team on Friday afternoon, who took down Smith 5-3 in game one before earning a 10-2 run rule game two victory.
The Engineers (13-12-1, 6-4 NEWMAC) are now above .500 for the first time this season and have overtaken Smith (15-10-1, 5-5) for fourth place in the NEWMAC standings.
Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, MA) and
Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) accounted for four RBIs in the first game of the day while
Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY) and
Riley O'Brien (Wynantskill, NY) added three RBIs apiece in the second game of the day as
Mia Francisco (Hudson, NH) added a pair of RBIs.
Destiny Lum (Kahalu'u, HI) scored the ultimate game winner for the Engineers in game one while game two was highlighted by a pair of four run innings, the initial in the third and the Engineers added another four runs in the sixth to end the game early.
Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, MA) continued her winning ways picking up the game one victory pitching all seven innings while allowing just four hits and two earned runs and striking out four.
Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA) went the distance in game two with six innings pitched, eight hits and just one earned run allowed.
Game One
Fairbairn got the scoring started in the first inning, singling up the middle to bring home a speedy
Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA). Russell started the game off with a single to right, stealing second in the next at bat and setting herself up for Fairbairn to bring her home.
Smith took its first lead of the day in the second inning putting a pair of runs across on a single up the middle but WPI evened the score in the fourth inning as a Nagy double to centerfield brought home
Callie Allison (Milford, OH) all the way from first, who started the inning off with a hit up the middle.
WPI regained the lead in the top of the fifth. O'Brien started things off with a single to left and was replaced on the basepaths by Francisco. Both Lum and Allison drew walks to load the bases for Nagy who sent a deep fly ball to center to bring home Francisco to break the tie.
Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) also utilized a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Lum as WPI gained a 4-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Engineers added another run to the total after a Fairbairn double once again brought home Russell for a 5-2 insurance run. Smith was able to get one back in the bottom half of the fifth with a leadoff homer to deep center to make it 5-3 but Boldebuck buckled down getting the next three batters in the sixth out and sitting the Pioneers down 1-2-3 in the seventh to earn the win.
Game Two
The Engineers managed to keep Smith off the board until the fifth inning in game two en route to their 10-2 victory.
WPI got things going in the second. Nagy reached on a fielder's choice and one batter later was driven home on a double to right from Sherwood to get the scoring going.
In the third, WPI piled on the runs first as a McKinney single to right brought home Russell, then when an O'Brien double to left brought in Fairbairn. Allison reached on a Smith fielding error which also allowed O'Brien to scamper across the plate and Nagy followed up with a double to center to bring in Allison for the 5-0 lead.
O'Brien started the fifth inning off with a leadoff homer to left field, her fifth roundtripper of the season, before Smith was able to manage a run in the bottom half of the frame to erase the shutout bid.
But WPI could not be stopped, adding another four runs in the sixth inning to come away with the run rule victory. McKinney's hot bat sent a double to center which brought in both Russell and
Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA). McKinney then came home on a long foul ball to right field to make it a 9-1 game followed by a Francisco single up the middle which brought home Fairbairn for the 10-1 lead.
Smith tried to keep the game going in the sixth getting a run back, but it was not enough as the Engineers hung on for the run rule win.
