WORCESTER -- For the third straight year, WPI men's rowing's varsity eight defeated Boston College to win the McCarthy-McGee Challenge Cup over the Eagles. The Engineers were second overall in the marquee event and won its other two races in action Saturday morning on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Crimson and Gray completed the 2000 meter course in a time of 6:24.38. The hosts were six seconds behind race winner Coast Guard (6:18.10) and nearly 16 quicker than Boston College (6:40.33). WPI now owns a 6-4 all-time advantage over the Eagles in competition for the Cup. Conn College was fourth, clocking a time of 7:07.68.
The Engineers tasted victory in second and third varsity races. The 2V (6:32.89) was nearly nine seconds faster than second place Coast Guard (6:41.79). BC (6:47.25) easily outpaced the Camels (7:25.82) for third place. The WPI 3V was victorious in the third varsity eight, reaching Regatta Point in a time of 6:40.3 while the Boynton Hillers 3V placed second in 6:41.72. UMass edged Coast Guard (6:58.26 to 7:00.63).
In the final race of the morning, UMass (7:24.60) bested Boston College (8:31.80) in the varsity four.
WPI is back on the water a week from today, competing in the New England Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, May 4th.
