Softball Rolls in Opener But Settles for Split After Coast Guard's Game Two Comeback

WORCESTER -- The WPI softball bats were booming in game one but Coast Guard put a halt to the Engineers 11-game win streak with a game two victory on Saturday afternoon.

WPI (20-13-1, 11-5 NEWMAC) picked up a five inning, 9-0 shutout to start the day off before Coast Guard (12-18, 10-6) rallied back in game two to pick up a 10-7 win to close out the day.

Riley O'Brien (Wynantskill, NY) finished game one with a 2-for-2 day with a homer driving in three RBIs while scoring another pair of runs. She added another two hits, one RBI and two runs scored in game two while Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and another two runs driven in.

Game One
The Engineers' big bats came alive in game one as WPI combined for three roundtrippers as the team hit for the cycle in a 9-0 victory over Coast Guard to start the day.

WPI put a trio of runs on the board in the first inning of game one thanks to the bats of Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, MA) and O'Brien . Fairbairn started the scoring off with a double to left field and O'Brien brought her home to make it a 3-0 game early on.

Fairbairn's bat came alive again in the third inning kicking off a four-run frame with a solo shot to left field followed again by a blast, this time from Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) who ripped a three run shot over the head of the Coast Guard left fielder to make it a 7-0 game.

In the fourth, after sitting down the Bears 1-2-3 in the top half of the inning, WPI added another pair of runs to the total. Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) started things off with a single to right and then stole second. Sydney Russell (Alexandria, VA) singled down the leftfield line to put runners on the corners, but then stole second herself.

With runners in scoring position, Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY) sent a deep sacrifice fly to right field to bring home a run followed by a triple to right from O'Brien to drive in Russell and make it a 9-0 game.

In the top of the fifth, Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, MA) kept it clean with a 1-2-3 inning to earn her third complete game shutout of the season. Boldebuck finished the five inning game allowing just five hits and striking out one.

Game Two
In game two, it was the Bears' bats that came alive in the final inning of action as Coast Guard was able to snap WPI's 11 game win-streak in game two of the day.

Despite WPI putting up four runs in the first inning and building a 6-1 lead early on, Coast Guard marched back to earn the 10-7 victory.

All four of the team's first inning runs came with two outs on the board. McKinney got things going with an infield single and a stolen base and was driven in one batter later by a Fairbairn double to left field.

O'Brien followed that up with a single, and moved up to second on a Coast Guard fielding error while Fairbairn came across to score. O'Brien scored one batter later on a Lazarus double and then Lazarus came around to score on a single up the middle by Nagy for the 4-0 lead.

After Coast Guard got one back in the top of the third, WPI built up its lead to six runs. After O'Brien and Fairbairn got on base, Lazarus grounded out to the pitcher but a throwing error led to a pair of runs scored for the 6-1 lead.

Both teams tacked on a run in the fifth and the Engineers led 7-2 heading into the final inning of action, but Coast Guard used five hits, including a three run homer to take the lead in an eight run top of the seventh to earn the comeback, 10-7 win.

Next Up
WPI returns to action on Friday, May 3 when the team plays host to Wheaton in a NEWMAC battle beginning at 3:30pm kicking off the final weekend of regular season action. Coast Guard will be back in action against the other NEWMAC Engineers when they head to MIT on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
