Springfield, MA --- Four different WPI student-athletes won individual events as the WPI men's track and field team placed fourth at the 2024 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) outdoor championships.
The Engineers finished just half a point behind third-place Babson and 6.5 points shy of the host Springfield Pride.
WPI got on the podium in Friday's first session of the championships when
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) placed second in the pole vault. Fleck's score of 4.85m, or 15 feet, 11 inches, was one of two performances on the day that surpassed the previous NEWMAC meet record.
William Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) took third place in the pole vault with a 4.40m showing.
On Saturday, WPI saw four conference champions crowned.
Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) was the winner in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:54.24, while
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) won the triple jump with a mark of 14.03m. Gerlach was also third in the high jump with a mark of 1.98 m.
David Reynolds (Andover, NH) paced the field in the 5,000 meters, winning the event in a time of 14:44.37. Bissoondial placed third in that race. WPI also went 1-3 in the 3,000 steeplechase, a conference championship event for
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) with a time of 9:24.71.
Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) was third.
A pair of top-three performances got WPI points in the 800 meters.
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) was second in 1:54.41, while
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) was a fraction of a second behind him in third.
In the relay events, WPI placed third in the 4x400 and fourth in the 4x100. The third place squad included Mosher,
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT),
Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA), and
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA).
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) snagged a third-place showing in the discus (40.29m) and took fourth in the hammer (42.20m), while
Ben Furman (Groton, MA) and
Michael Neff (West Hartford, CT) went 3-4 in the javelin event.
MIT were crowned conference champions with a 234-point performance.
