Bissoondial, Catuccio, Fleck Victorious as Men’s Track and Field Runner-Up at Springfield Classic

Springfield, MA --- The WPI men's track and field finished second overall at Springfield College Outdoor Classic on Saturday. The Engineers won four event titles with 29 total top-five finishes.
 
Springfield won the team title with 201.50 points, with the Engineers a close second at 189. Keene State was third with 105 points, as eight total teams competed at the meet.
 
Senior Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA), junior Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT), and sophomore Gavin Fleck (Bend. OR) all took home event titles for WPI.
 
Bissoondial won the 1500m event in a time of 4:01.97, leading four Engineers in the top five. Sophomore Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) was the runner-up in 4:04.20, while graduate student David Reynolds (Andover, NH) was fourth (4:05.98) and sophomore Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) was fifth (4:11.31).
 
Fleck stood atop the pole vault podium, throwing 4.75m to win the event, leading five Engineers in the top five. Junior William Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) was second with a 4.10m clear, freshman Ajay Bellamy (Stratford, CT) was third, going 3.95m, and senior Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY) and senior Chris Nguyen (Tewksbury, MA) tied for fifth, clearing 4.10m.
 
Catuccio grabbed his victory in the high jump with a best leap of 1.92m. Sophomore Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) was third in the event, going 1.87m.
 
In the throws, WPI racked up seven top-five finishes, led by freshman Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) who made three difference podiums. He was third in the discus (40.14m), fourth in the hammer (39.29m), and fifth in the shot put (12.53m), where freshman Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) was third with a 13.41m. In the javelin, junior Lucas Anthony (Lincoln, MA) was the runner-up (49.98m), while freshman Matt Richards (Peabody, MA) was third (49.76m), and junior Ben Furman (Groton, MA) was fifth (49.16m).
 
Sophomore Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) led the Engineers in the sprints, taking fifth in the 200m dash (22.46) and fourth in the 100m dash (11.23), where freshman Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) was fifth (11.28). Freshman Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) nabbed a fourth-place finish in the 400m dash in 52.87.
 
Rounding out the individual highlights, sophomore Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) and Bissoondial were two-three in the 800m run, going 1:56.87 and 1:58.16, respectively, while sophomore Nathan Barry (Newburyport, MA) was fourth in the 5000 meter run in 16:25.02.
 
WPI took runner-up honors in both relays. In the 4x100, freshman Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA), senior Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Manteria, and Cole combined to run a time of 43.67.
 
In the 4x400, Boybeyi, Mosher, sophomore Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA), and Andrew, were second in 3:31.57. The Engineers also took fourth in 3:34.36 (freshman Russell Hertel (Westminster, MA), Amour, freshman Alex Latsko (New Windsor, NY), and Wyche) and fifth in 3:37.27 (Skerry, freshman Ryan Coceano (Cinnaminson, NJ) senior Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH), and junior Brendan May (Rutland, MA).
 
The Engineers are back in action at the UMass Commonwealth Invitational on April 13.
