Eldridge’s Triple Double Helps Volleyball Defeat Regis in Back-and-Forth Affair

WORCESTER -- Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) collected her first career triple double with 12 kills, 15 assists and 13 digs to help WPI rally to defeat visiting Regis 3-2 in a non-conference volleyball matchup played Tuesday evening inside Harrington Auditorium.

The Engineers see their record level at 4-4 on the young season while the Pride dip to 8-4 overall.

The opening set featured back-and-forth action between the Engineers and the visiting Pride as the margin in score did not exceed past one until 8-10 as there were eight ties and just four lead changes throughout the first set.  Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, MA) led the Pride with four kills hitting at .500 in the set as Grace Fabiano (Greenland, NH) and Ayla Albers (San Diego, CA) each tacked on a trio of kills helping the visitors to take the first set in Harrington, 25-22. Audrey Stroupe (Leesburg, VA) paced the Engineers with four kills as Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA) chipped in with three kills and three assists.

Regis took advantage of early errors and added a few kills by McKinney and Albers before Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ) and Eldridge queued the offensive attack. Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) recorded her first point of the match with an ace to contribute to a quick turnaround in the set helping the hosts take a 7-4 lead. Eldridge and Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) kept the match at a four-point lead with kills of their own before the Pride recorded four errant attacks to increase the Engineers' lead 15-8. Both squads exchanged points keeping the match steady until Stroupe and an ace by Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) and a Hudson-Eldridge block brought the match to a 23-19 score. Fiona Gillis (Manchester, NH) then closed out the set with a kill and an attack error by the visitors for WPI to tie the match at 1-1.

Once again, the Engineers and Regis battled a tight set as the visitors totaled 35 attack attempts but only connected on 10 by six different members of the Pride. Gillis, Eldridge and Kelnik kept the attack going for the hosts combining for seven on 20 attempts. WPI recorded another five-point run stemmed from three Regis attack errors and kills by Eldridge and Gillis to take the 17-15 for its first lead of the set. Kelnik kept the lead for the hosts with back-to-back kills before Regis stormed back taking advantage of a Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, MA) kill and two aces by Albers to retake the lead late in the set. Attack errors by Fabiano and Avery Mola (Cheshire, CT) wrapped up the third set in favor of WPI 25-23.

The Pride totaled 12 kills led by Mola who recorded four on seven total attacks. Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, CT) paced the offense in the fourth set with seven assists. For WPI, Jerebker accounted for four assists as five different Engineers tallied kills but fell 25-16 as Regis fought back to force a fifth set.

Regis took the first few points in the final set backed by a McKinney kill, errant attack by Stroupe and an ace to give the visitors a quick 3-0 lead as the Pride tamed the host recording the largest lead of the set at 6-2. WPI then rolled for a 9-3 run kickstarted by a Gillis kill, two attacking errors and a bad set by the Pride to equalize the score at 6-6 before Fabiano and Albers teamed up for three-straight kills to give the visitors another three-point lead. The Engineers continued to stay within reach due to Regis errors and a block by Eldridge and VanDamme as the run was capped off by an Eldridge and Stroupe kill to claim a 12-9 edge. Both squads continued to exchange kills as VanDamme, Eldridge and Hudson recorded the final strikes to earn the 15-13 victory for the match victory.

Joining Eldridge in the double-digit club was Jerebker who posted a team-high 22 assists on the evening. On the defensive end, Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) accounted for a game-high 28 digs in addition to Alana Harris (Lowell, MA) who finished second overall with 15 digs.

Mckinney paced Regis with 15 digs while Fabiano and Mola both reached double digits with 11 kills each.   Rivera (24) and Mckinney (22) combined for 46 of the Pride's 50 assists while Mola led four players in double figures in digs with 17.  Mola ended the night with a match-high seven service aces.

Up next, WPI stays at home to face Eastern Connecticut on Friday at 5pm while Regis hosts to Elms at 11am contest and New England College at 3pm in a home tri-match.
