WORCESTER -- Nationally-ranked Amherst tallied goals early in each half to propel the guests to a 3-0 shutout of host WPI in a non-conference women's soccer tilt on Tuesday evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
The Mammoths, ranked ninth in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Top 25, start their season while the Crimson and Gray see their record even up at 1-1 in 2024.
The guests came out of the gates quickly, collecting a pair of shots in first 12 minutes before a flurry of activity in the 15th minute got Amherst on the board. Shots by
Kate Quigley (Potomac, MD) and
Alyssa Huynh (San Diego, CA) were cleared off of the line by
Josephine Conlon (Hoboken, NJ) and
Lottie McLeod (Newton, MA), respectively, before
Carter Hollingsworth (Houston, TX) cleaned up the mess by knocking the ball into the goal at 15:43.
Amherst struck again seven minutes into the second half when
Caroline Coletti (Carlisle, MA) dribbled down the sideline past two defenders and tucked the ball past the WPI goalie to make it 2-0.
The score would stay that way until just over five minutes remaining when Amherst's
Becca Button's (San Francisco, CA) header hit the crossbar and the Crimson and Gray netminder
Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) dove to deflect it off the line, but to the waiting foot of
Halle Hanna (Mill Valley, CA), who tapped it in for the Mammoths.
Mika Fisher (Englewood, CO) had two saves while recording the clean sheet for the visitors, and Hellerman registered seven stops for the Engineers while McLeod accounted for two of the hosts three team saves on the night.
Amherst held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, as well as a 18-7 upper hand in shots. Huynh had 5 shots on goal for the Mammoths.
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) added 3 shots for WPI.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday. WPI closes out a three-game season-opening homestand, facing Roger Williams in a 1pm matchup, while Amherst travels home to play a conference game against Connecticut College at noon.
