WORCESTER --- The WPI women's soccer team posted a 4-1 win with a
Rian Fadden (Leicester, MA) header in the first 1:22 of action backed by three second goals on H. Carr Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, WPI advances to 2-1 as Roger Williams dropped its first match of 2024 to fall to 3-1 this fall.
The Engineers took little time to get on the board as
Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO) played a ball to the front of the box and found Fadden's head for a tap-in goal for the quick lead over the visitors. The Crimson and Gray coasted through the first half and enjoyed a slight 8-6 advantage in shots with half of the strikes on target forcing
Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, CT) to make four saves to keep the match within reach heading into the intermission.
WPI logged it's second goal of the afternoon as
Delaney Mohl (Hopewell Junction, NY) played a cross that was deflected by Marrelli and
Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) gathered the rebound to place a ball into an open goal to extend the lead to two over the Hawks.
Roger Williams'
Julia Robbins (Johnston, RI) posted the best look of the afternoon but was steered away by
Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA).
Madison Shaw (Cheshire, CT) cleared a ball from the Engineers' defensive end and played a long ball up the field that took a long bounce over defenders before being misplayed by a Hawks defender as
Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) gathered the ball and laced a ball in the left corner past the keeper for the third goal of the contest.
The Hawks responded 1:14 later off a corner kick opportunity as
Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, MA) connected with
Simone Cassano (Schenectady, NY) for her fourth goal of the season to bring the contest to 3-1.
In the final minutes of action,
Julia Karman (Northport, NY) marked her first goal of the season and third in her career off a free kick opportunity from 25-yards out that skimmed over the keeper's hands to post the final strike of the afternoon.
WPI hits the road on Wednesday to take on the Cardinals of Wesleyan in Middletown at 4:30pm. Roger Williams has a quick turnaround hosting Wheaton at Bayside Field on Monday at 4pm.
