Wrestling Posts Pair of Dual Victories in First Matches of 2025

WORCESTER --- The WPI wrestling program posted a pair of dual match victories versus Bridgewater State and Maine Maritime and fell in the nightcap of the WPI quad on Saturday in the WPI Sports & Recreation Center.
 
WPI claimed two strong victories against Bridgewater State and Maine Maritime with scores of 45-7 and 54-3 respectively. With the pair of victories and defeat to Wesleyan, WPI stands at 7-2, marking one of the best starts in program history since 2019. Bridgewater State dropped to 0-4 in dual matches as Maine Maritime is now 0-1 and Wesleyan advanced to 3-0 to their respective dual match records.
 
In the opening dual of the day versus Bridgewater State, the Engineers rattled wins in eight of the 10 matches as senior Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ), who was recently ranked third in NWCA Region I in the 125-pound class, secured the first triumph of the day by pinfall over Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, MN) at 2:44. Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) collected a win by tech fall over Christopher Dubey (Lowell, MA) just 3:47 into the bout at 133 before the Bears' Malcolm Chrispin (Hyde Park, MA) held off Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) for a 14-3 major decision victory at 141 to get Bridgewater State on the board.
 
The Engineers got back on track with six consecutive wins as Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA), Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC), Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA), Joe Tully (Carver, MA), Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) and Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) all were deemed victorious as they were all determined pinfall or tech fall as WPI cruised to the 45-7 match victory.
 
Ethan Wilson (Braintree, MA) and John-Michael Economos (Staten Island, NY) collected wins in their respective exhibition matchups.
 
WPI continued its strong performance as the six members of the Crimson and Gray had their hands raised to kickoff the second dual of the day versus Maine Maritime featuring a pair of first period pinfall wins by Ezekial Kasen (Brookline, MA) and Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA). Edmondson captured his second victory of the day with a pin over Gregory Brunk (Buxton, ME). LeSieur and Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) were deemed winners of their respective matches to close the second dual triumph of the day, 54-3.
 
In the final dual contest of the afternoon, Thatcher and Wesleyan's Chris Hong (Paramus, NJ) grappled to a tightly contested 7-4 decision in favor of WPI, to mark Thatcher's second win of the day. Pavis, Tully, and Edmondson battled to the final whistle but came up short in their respective decisions as the Engineers dropped their final match of the day to Wesleyan, 38-3.
 
The Crimson and Gray continue their homestand as they are set to host Coast Guard in dual action on Wednesday, January 15th at 1pm in the WPI Sports & Recreation Center.
 
Bridgewater State and Wesleyan return to the mat next Saturday, January 18th the Bears host Williams in a dual meet showdown at 1pm as the Cardinals head to the Ursinus Tournament scheduled for 9am in Collegeville, PA. Maine Maritime will head to Johnson & Wales the following week on January 25th for a dual matchup scheduled for a 9:30am start.
