Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Haas, Amorim, Burch, Bastida-Andreu Spark Men's Soccer to 3-2 Comeback Victory over Springfield

WORCESTER -- Brady Burch (South Deerfield, MA) and Fabio Bastida-Andreu (Logrono, Spain) posted second half goals and Noah Amorim (Weymouth, MA) doled out a pair of assists as WPI men's soccer rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to rally and defeat visiting Springfield 3-2 and provide the Engineers a critical three points on Saturday evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

The victory ups WPI's record to 5-3-5 on the season and 2-1-1 in conference play while the Pride slip to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC action.  With the result, the Crimson and Gray leapfrog Springfield and currently sit in fourth place in the nine-team league with seven points.  There are two weeks remaining in conference play with the top six teams qualifying for next month's NEWMAC Tournament.

Prior to the game, WPI honored is seven seniors including Floris Huiskers (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Edward Zazzali (Nutley, NJ), Aidan McLoughlin (Colchester, CT), Tora Ito (Hopkinton, MA), Bastida-Andreu, Haas and Anthony Coutts (Millis, MA).

The Pride wasted no time in starting the scoring, as Aidan Hallinan (New Windsor, NY) sent a long thru pass to Parker Thornton (Malden, MA), who controlled the ball and shot it into the bottom left corner just 1:05 into the match.

WPI pulled even just after the half hour mark when Amorim sent a free kick into the box from nearly 40 yards out that found the head of Evan Haas (Concord, NH) and the senior tri-captain registered his second goal of 2025.   The visitors took the lead back in the waning minutes of the half when the Pride drew a penalty kick and Connor Policarpio (Bristol, CT) converted the spot kick at 42:19 to give SC a 2-1 edge at the break.

Springfield maintained the slight bulge until the final 20 minutes.  The Engineers earned a corner, which was served in by Amorim and volleyed home by Burch for the equalizer at 71:28.  The hosts continued to mount pressure in the final minutes and were rewarded when Fabio Bastida-Andreu (Logrono, Spain) knocked home a rebound following a header by Burch that was saved originally by Springfield's Noah Pote (Washington, CT).  Playing with the lead for the first time all night, the WPI defense stiffened and did not allow a shot over the last 8:48 to secure the victory.

Savio Ketnouvong (Paxton, MA) was credited with three saves in net for the Crimson and Gray while Pote turned away nine shots for the Pride.   Overall, the hosts outshot Springfield, 22-8, but the guests held a 5-2 edge in corners.

WPI returns to the field on Wednesday when they begin a two-match road trip with a 3:30pm match at No. 10 Wheaton.   In a scheduling oddity, Springfield returns to Worcester next Saturday, after a midway conference bye, to face Clark.  Kickoff is slated for 11am.
