Lynch Leads Attack as Volleyball is Doomed by Wellesley in Tuesday Night Action

WORCESTER --- WPI Volleyball fell in straight sets to Wellesley, 25-15, 25-21, 25-17, inside of Harrington Auditorium on Tuesday night. 
 
WPI falls to 9-11 overall and 2-6 in NEWMAC action as Wellesley evens out its record at 9-9 overall and 4-4 in NEWMAC play. 
 
The visiting Blue erupted on the evening as they posted 19 kills in the opening set en route to a demanding 25-15 victory as freshman Amelia Lynch (Charlottesville, VA) paced the way for the hosts in the first set with five kills on nine attempts. Meanwhile, Wellesley were driven by Kaija Kunze-Hoeg's (Eagan, MN) and Evie Hill's (Rocklin, CA) attacks combining for 12 kills amongst the duo. 
 
WPI's Olivia Hutchinson (Erie, PA) and Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ) arms came alive in the second set joining forces for seven kills on just eight attempts but was outpaced by the Blue's 18 kills as the visitors took the set by a near 25-21 margin for the 2-0 match lead. 
 
The third set was back-and-forth at the start with kills Hutchinson, Kelnik and Lynch until Wellesley posted a five-point run to jump to a 12-6 lead in the third set. Lynch continued to stretch strikes together with three kills but the lead was insurmountable as the visitors tacked on 13 kills and eight errant attacks en route to the 25-17 set win and 3-0 result of the match. 
 
WPI's Lynch led the attack on the night with nine kills accompanied by Kelnik and Hutchinson who registered seven and six respectively. Hutchinson, Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) and Kelnik combined for seven blocks on the evening as Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) controlled the offense with 12 assists. 
 
Kaija Kunze-Hoeg paced the Blue attack as she tied a career-high 19 kills and led with 21 digs for the double double. Hill joined with 10 kills on the night in addition to a trio of aces. Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, MN) doled out a match-high 37 assists. 
 
The Engineers will head to Southern Maine on Saturday to take on Western Connecticut in tri-match action starting at 2pm followed by a match versus the hosting Huskies at 4pm. Wellesley returns home host Bowdoin in non-conference play on Friday at 7pm.
