Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) was a perfect 3-0 on the day and
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA),
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA),
Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) and
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) all won multiple events on the day as WPI wrestling went 2-1 Saturday hosting a Super Quad in the Sports and Recreation Center. The Engineers defeated Norwich 24-19 to open the day, fell to St. John Fisher 32-9 in their middle match and closed out the day by dispatching Emmanuel 38-10.
In other action on Saturday, Roger Williams went 3-0, besting St. John Fisher (16-16 on criteria), Norwich (28-14) and Emmanuel (28-9), St. John Fisher knocked off Norwich (31-17) and Norwich defeated Emmanuel (24-21).
The day began with the hosts squaring off with Norwich as the visitors and the Engineers alternated victories through the first six bouts, five of which featured bonus point wins. WPI built momentum throughout the opening match with
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) collecting a 15-6 major decision at 133 pounds,
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) posting a 21-6 tech fall (5:21) at 149 and
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) concluding the alternating pattern with a third period pin at 165 (5:30).
Leading 16-14, the Crimson and Gray created the separation needed to claim the team victory with triumphs at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.
Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) continued the trend of WPI bonus points wins with a comprehensive 14-2 major decision at 174 and
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA), ranked seventh in the latest NEWA rankings at 184 , handed the Engineers a 24-13 advantage with a 17-0 tech fall at 3:55. Nursing a nine-point edge with just two bouts left, the hosts stayed out of danger in those last two matches as Norwich claimed wins by decisions in both, resulting in the 24-19 WPI victory.
St. John Fisher captured the first seven matches in WPI's second match-up of the day. Tully was a bright spot for the Boynton Hillers, pinning his foe early in the second period at 3:14 and heavyweight
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) cracked the win column with a 5-1 triumph to close out the showdown with the Cardinals.
After a long break during the mid and late afternoon, the Engineers rattled off seven straight victories to close out the night and defeated Emmanuel 38-10. The Saints captured two of the first tree bouts, with Pavis registering a 19-1 tech fall at 133 to get the Crimson and Gray into the win column.
Beginning at 149 pounds , it was all WPI as Basara started the onslaught with a 19-4 tech fall at the 5:22 mark.
David Parrish (McDonough, GA) picked up his first collegiate dual meet victory with a 10-5 decision at 157 before
Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA) came through with a second period pin at 3:43 at 165. Sawyers continued the pin parade with a fall at 3:00 in his match at 174. The hosts wrapped up with night with three bonus points victories including a 8-0 major decision by Tully at 184, a 12-3 major decision by
Joe Bernard (Stratham, NH) at 197 and a 15-0 tech fall (3:56) from Bowen at 285.
With Thanksgiving this coming week, all five teams are off for two weeks and return to the mats on Saturday, December 6th. WPI (4-1) and Emmanuel (3-4) will be in Gorham, Maine for the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine, St. John Fisher (4-1) and Norwich (2-4) venture to Rochester, New York for the RIT Invitational and Roger Williams (4-1) heads to Springfield, Massachusetts for a tri-match with host Western New England and Hunter (NY).
