Men’s Swimming and Diving Places Second in Newly Formatted Worcester City Championships

Lucas Pralle
WORCESTER -- WPI hosted a revamped Worcester City Championships which saw the Division I Holy Cross, Division II Assumption and fellow NEWMAC rival Clark University compete in three separate Pentathlons.

Swimmers contested either the 400 IM and the four two hundreds, the 200 IM and the four one hundreds or the 100 IM and the four 50s. The swimmers with the lowest cumulative time across their respective events were crowned the winners and collected both a crown and robe.

The swimmers weren't alone in collecting the hardware as the divers took on both the 1 meter and 3-meter springboards. On the taller of the boards, Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA) posted the second highest score as he collected 193.05 points. First year Aaron Lakin (Hamden, CT) collected 5th place points as he scored 141.45. Lakin also collected 5th place points on the 1m posting a season best score of 153.65, just 21 points back of Fitzgerald's 174.50.

In the longest pentathlon, the 400 IM and four 200s, first year Lucas Brown (Viera, FL) had the 5th fastest cumulative time swimming the five events in 12:19.62. Brown posted the 3rd fastest times in both the 400 IM and 200 Fly going 4:10.56 and 1:59.34 respectively. His teammate Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) took 3rd in the 200 back going 2:00.13, and made up some ground on Brown in overall standings, as he finished 5th, albeit .30 back.

Smith again earned some time back on his younger teammate posting the fastest 200 breaststroke time on the team, finishing 4th overall in 2:16.46, with Brown slipping out of the top 5, finishing 7th with a time of 2:19.17. The 200 free was a close contest between the pair with Brown coming out ahead of Smith 1:50.12 to 1:51.11, but neither were the top Engineer in the event as junior Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) blasted a 1:47.20 to finish 4th overall in the event. Those three were the top WPI swimmers in the five events with Smith finishing just one spot back of Brown at 6th with his cumulative time of 12:32.76. Doubek and fellow junior Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) joined the pair in the top 10, finishing 8th and 10th respectively, at 13:05.91 and 13:24.60.

In the middle-distanced pentathlon (200 IM and 100s), WPI occupied half of the top 10, with first-year Deion Chung (Honolulu, HI) and junior Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) finishing 3rd and 5th overall. The pair got things off to a hot start in the 200 IM, with Chung finishing 3rd overall with a 2:00.79, less than three seconds clear of Pralle's 2:03.33. Pralle cut back on Chung's lead in the 100 fly, as the junior won the event, placing first overall with the lone sub-53 time in the field (52.93). Chung would touch 5th in 54.53, behind juniors Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) who was 3rd  with a 54.14) and Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) whose 54.15 earned him 4th.

The 100 back saw Pralle again on the podium as he finished 3rd overall with a 56.06, ahead of familiar faces, Van De Water (6th – 57.67), Tesoro (58.22) and Chung (9th – 58.39). First-year Luke Vipond (Mahtomedi, MN) placed 2nd in the 100 breaststroke, hitting the wall in 1:00.84, with fellow breaststroker Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) collecting 6th place points with his 1:03.91. Chung's 1:03.98 was good for 7th place and kept him in the running for a strong overall finish as also had a top 10 finish in the 100 free going 49.77, which was good for 6th overall and earned him a cumulative time of 5:47.46. Pralle's 50.01, which was good for 9th overall, kept him up near the front of the pack and the junior finished 5th overall with a time of 5:51.32. Tesoro joined Pralle as an event winner, as his 47.86 was the lone time under 49.00 and collected the maximum 20 points in the team score.

In the Splash and Dash Pentathlon, WPI also earned multiple top ten finishes as first years Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY), and Kuba Latawiec (Newington, CT) finished 5th and 10th overall, with sophomore Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA) splitting the pair at 8th. With the events much shorter, the margins of victory were much smaller with Sundberg's cumulative time of 2:36.32, just five seconds off the winning time.

The IM results were telling as the trio finished in 5th, 8th and 10th with respective times of 55.27, 55.68 and 56.92. Ahluwalia posted the fastest 50 fly time for the Engineers (6th – 24.30), and the fastest 50 back time (3rd – 25.40). Sundberg posted strong times as well in each of those events but used a swift 27.38 to earn a 2nd place finish in the 50 breast and pulled himself ahead of the sophomore in the overall rankings. The New York native also recorded the fastest 50 time for the team, going 22.12 to finish 5th in the event, ahead of Ahluwalia's 22.42, which was good for 9th overall.

WPI is back quickly in action as they host Division II Southern Connecticut State on Friday 6pm.
