Volleyball Sweeps Salve Regina as WPI Honors Gillis, Harris and Escuer on Senior Day

WORCESTER -- The WPI volleyball team wrapped up its 2025 campaign in style, sweeping Salve Regina 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers finish the season at 11-16 overall and 3-8 in NEWMAC play, while the Seahawks close their season at 12-17, 2-9.

Before the match, WPI honored its three seniors, Fiona Gillis (Manchester, NH), Alana Harris (Lowell, MA), and Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela), for their contributions to the program.

For the Engineers, Gillis led all players with 11 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Olivia Hutchinson (Erie, PA) and Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ) each finished with nine kills, with Hutchinson adding two service aces and three total blocks. Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) notched seven kills and two blocks, while Bridget Spees (Saint Johns, FL) recorded five kills and three aces. Lauren Boycourt (San Diego, CA) guided the attack with 24 assists and Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) handed out 13. Escuer led the back row with 16 digs and added two assists and an ace on the afternoon.

The Engineers came out strong, building an early lead behind Escuer's serve and quick-hitting offense from Gillis and Kelnik. A service ace from Hutchinson and kills from Spees and VanDamme helped WPI extend its advantage midway through the frame. The hosts closed on a 6-2 run, highlighted by a final swing from VanDamme to seal a 25-15 win.

Salve Regina hung close early before back-to-back kills from Hutchinson and Kelnik gave WPI breathing room. The Engineers' front row dominated defensively with five team blocks in the set, while Spees added a service ace and a late kill to cap a 25-18 victory.

Gillis and Hutchinson powered WPI's offense down the stretch, combining for eight kills in the final frame. A balanced attack from Kelnik and VanDamme kept Salve Regina off balance as the Engineers hit .313 to complete the sweep. Gillis delivered the final point with a kill off a feed from Boycourt.

Salve Regina was paced by Lauren Hoyle with eight kills, while Francesca Spadorcia added six and Lucy Swanson chipped in five. Kate Andy (Norton, MA) dished out a team-high 10 assists, and Madelyn Homer (North Easton, MA) paced the defense with 13 digs.

For the match, WPI hit .283 as a team and led the statistical battle across the board, tallying 44 kills to Salve Regina's 29, while adding seven aces, five total blocks, and 54 digs.
