Newport, RI --- Another day, another sweep for the WPI softball team who bested Salve Regina in a pair of NEWMAC games Saturday afternoon to round out the team's week of action.
Â
The Engineers (17-10, 7-5 NEWMAC) upended Salve (9-20, 4-9) by a score of 6-2 in game one and wrapped up the week with a 5-1 game two victory.Â
Â
In game one,
Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, MA) picked up her 10th victory of the season, the first time she has reached that milestone in her WPI career and marks the first Engineer pitcher with a 10-win season since
Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) achieved the feat in 2022 with a 24-8 year. Boldebuck finished the outing pitching all seven innings, allowing seven hits and the pair of runs while striking out a season-high eight batters.Â
Â
Sofia Knopf (Plymouth, MA) delivered in game two to earn her third win of the year and second in as many games with a seven inning, two-hitter, allowing just one run on the day while notching five strikeouts. .
Â
The Engineers put together 10 hits in game one as
Lucy Latour's (North Dighton, MA) kept her hot bat going with a 2-for-4 day scoring a run and knocking one in while adding her ninth stolen base of the year.
Destiny Lum (Kahalu'u, HI) and
Riley O'Brien (Wynantskill, NY) also finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.Â
Â
In game two,
Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, MA) led the way with a 2-for-4 day, scoring three runs while driving another in while
Ariana Kreuzer (Walpole, MA) added a pair of RBIs in the outing.
Â
GAME ONE
The Engineer bats got things going in the top of the first as
Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY) drew a walk, stole second and came around to score on a Lum double to right center. Lum moved up on an infield ground out and also scored when Fairbairn got herself into a pickle long enough for Lum to touch the plate for a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
Salve Regina would add one back in the bottom half of the inning but WPI added another pair to its total in the second inning.
Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) started things off with an infield single and moved up to second as Kreuzer also reached on an attempted sacrifice that ended up with a pair of runners on. Nagy also laid down the sacrifice to get both the runners in scoring position for Latour who singled to left center to drive in a pair for the 4-1 advantage.Â
Â
Salve was able to add another run to the total, but not until the sixth inning and once again WPI responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to seal the deal. Latour kicked things off again with a single, moving up to second on a throwing error and came around to score on a single to right center from McKinney. Lum put runners on first and second and after a pitching change, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and McKinney scored on a sac fly to left from O'Brien.Â
Â
Boldebuck ended the game getting the final batter of the day out by way of the K to set her new season high in 2025.Â
Â
GAME TWO
In game two, WPI got on the board first once again, this time in the second inning when the Engineers added a trio of runs to their total.Â
Â
O'Brien began things with a triple to right and came home one batter later as Fairbairn ripped a shot at shortstop that was bobbled to allow her to reach and O'Brien to score. Fairbairn took second followed by a Jordan walk. Both runners moved up a bag and a Kreuzer ground out brought home Fairbairn, while Jordan came home on a squeeze for the 3-0 lead.Â
Â
In the fourth, Fairbairn used her speed to add another run to the total. She began with a single to the pitcher, stole second, robbed third and on a throwing error nabbed home for the 4-0 lead.Â
Â
The Seahawks added a run in the fifth, but WPI regained the four-run advantage in the sixth once again thanks to Fairbairn and her speed. She singled through the left side to start things, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and on a Kreuzer single through the right side made it a 5-1 game, giving Knopf a lead she clung to until the final out. Knopf sat down the Salve hitters 1-2-3 in the final two innings of action, also ending the series with a strikeout.Â
