WORCESTER -- Tufts men's rowing retained the Baker Cup as the Jumbos varsity eight defeated WPI for a fifth straight occasion Sunday morning as only three races were able to be contested Easter morning as wind and whitecaps canceled the men's four race and all women's competition after officials determined the course had become too unsafe.

The Jumbos, fourth in the most recent IRCA/IRA Men's Collegiate Rowing Preseason Poll, led wire-to-wire in the varsity eight, clocking a time of 5:57.71.  The host and 10th-ranked Engineers placed third overall with a time of 6:07.87 as the two rivals competed for the Baker Cup.  No. 6 Marietta finished in a time of 6:03.32 to take second while Conn College was fourth (6:45.88).

The four schools produced an identical finish in the second varsity eight.  Tufts reached the finish line at Regatta Point in 6:02.50, followed by the Pioneers (6:10.71), WPI (6:17.20) and the Camels (7:06.40).  In what proved to be the final race of the morning, the Jumbos 3V took gold with their 4V 15.65 seconds behind.  The Crimson and Gray 3V reached 2,000 meters five seconds later while their 4V was four.

The WPI and Tufts women were set to battle for the Bernie Brown Cup with three sets of eights racing and the men were scheduled to see their four go head-to-head but course officials deemed the course to be unsafe due to the win and the subsequent whitecaps, cancelling racing for the rest of the holiday.

Next Saturday will be a busy day of racing for WPI on Lake Quinsigamond.  The women will participate in the NEWMAC Championships while the men will host the McGee/McCarthy Cup on with Boston College, Connecticut College, Coast Guard and UMass.  Racing begins at 8:30am.
