Lattimer Notches Seven Hits, Cash Belts a Pair of Homers as Baseball Splits with Springfield

WORCESTER -- WPI baseball split a NEWMAC doubleheader with Springfield on Sunday afternoon at Granger Field. The Engineers took game one, 11-5, before the Pride rallied late to claim an 11-7 victory in the nightcap. WPI moves to 14-21 overall and 2-11 in conference play, while Springfield sits at 11-21 and 4-9 in the NEWMAC.

GAME ONE
WPI's offense erupted for 13 hits and capitalized on a pair of Springfield errors to take the opener.

Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored to lead the Engineers. Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) collected three hits, two RBI, and a stolen base, while Matt Shea (Andover, MA) added two hits, an RBI, and a steal. Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) doubled and drove in two runs, and Joe DiMichele (East Longmeadow, MA) contributed an RBI double.

On the mound, D.C. Brown (Plymouth, MA) earned the win, throwing seven innings and allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts. Brian Riley (East Taunton, MA) tossed the final two innings to close it out.

Springfield was led by Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, MA), who finished 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Chris Balchius (Norwalk, CT) added two doubles, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, MA) chipped in an RBI single. JP Catellier (Springfield, MA) took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings.

Springfield struck first with runs in each of the first three innings, but WPI responded with two sacrifice flies in the second and two unearned runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) singled home a run in the fourth, and Cappello ripped a two-run double in the fifth to push the advantage to 7-3.

Lattimer's two-run homer and Shea's RBI single highlighted a three-run sixth inning, and Wiberg added an RBI single in the seventh to cap the WPI scoring.

Springfield got one run back in both the seventh and ninth, but the Engineers stayed comfortably ahead to secure the win.

GAME TWO
Springfield used a four-run eighth inning to pull away for the victory in the nightcap.

Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) powered WPI at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two home runs (his 10th and 11th of the season) and four RBI. Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Gavin George (Salem, NH) chipped in two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, while Lattimer recorded three more hits.

Luke Blandino (Eden, NY) started for WPI and allowed six runs over five innings with six strikeouts. Ethan Smith (Hanson, MA) took the loss in relief.

Dunaisky had a four-RBI game for Springfield, hitting a grand slam in the third inning and adding an RBI single in the eighth. Adam Crocker (Windsor, NS) recorded three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Balchius reached base three times and stole three bases. Ryan Delaney (Ellington, CT) earned the win with two innings of relief.

After a scoreless first, WPI jumped ahead with a three-run homer from Cash in the second. Springfield answered with a five-run third, including Crocker's RBI single and Dunaisky's grand slam.

Roethlein doubled home a run and George tripled in another to tie the game at 5-5 in the third. Springfield regained the lead on a wild pitch in the fourth and added a run on a Crocker triple in the sixth to make it 7-5.

Roethlein's solo homer in the sixth and Cash's second blast of the game in the seventh tied the contest again, but Springfield took control in the eighth. Dunaisky singled home a run before a walk and a throwing error allowed three more unearned runs to cross.

WPI threatened late but could not rally as Springfield closed out the win to split the doubleheader.

Up next, WPI travels to Clark on Tuesday, April 29, for a 3:30pm NEWMAC matchup. Springfield visits Coast Guard for a conference game the same day, also at 3:30pm.
