Marlboro, MA — WPI Softball's Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY) was selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Athlete of the Week for the week ending on April 27th.
Joining McKinney was Babson's Cameron Whiteford as the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
McKinney posted a stellar week at the plate and on the bases, hitting .615 (8-for-13) with nine runs scored, six RBI, a pair of triples, a double, and five stolen bags throughout four games for the Engineers. The sophomore outfielder was unstoppable during a sweep of Clark, going 4-for-4 in game two with a double, two triples, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Earlier in the week against Amherst, McKinney added a three-hit, three-run outing, including a stolen base and an RBI double. Overall, she posted a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.077 slugging percentage, igniting the WPI offense at the top of the lineup during a 3–1 week.
This week's honor marks the first-career weekly accolade for McKinney and the second for the WPI program this season.
WPI (20-11, 9-5 NEWMAC) heads into a busy final week of the regular season, starting today with a doubleheader at Coast Guard beginning at 3pm.
