Engineers Drop Final Non-Conference Game at Hartford as Latour and Lum Total Four Hits

Hartford, CT --- In the final non-conference game of the 2025 season, the WPI softball team fell 7-2 to Hartford on Tuesday afternoon.

The Engineers (22-12) played their third game in 24 hours after sweeping Coast Guard on Monday afternoon. Hartford (19-16-1) put up four runs in the first inning, enough to hang on for the victory.

Kaitlyn Barr (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) pitched all six innings of action for the Engineers finishing with eight hits and seven runs allowed while striking out three. On the offensive front, both Lucy Latour (North Dighton, MA) and Destiny Lum (Kahalu'u, HI) with a pair of hits on the day.

Hartford took advantage of an early struggle on the mound to get a pair of runs across before a single through the right side made it a 4-0 game after one complete inning. The Hawks added another run in the third inning and a pair of runs in the fourth for the 7-0 advantage, but Barr was able to get the final batter of the inning to pop out to stave off the run-rule bid.

As usual, WPI battled right until the end and in the seventh inning of action the Engineers squashed the shutout bid putting together a pair of runs. Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) started things off with a single to left, moving over to third on a double to right center from Latour.

Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY) followed that up with a single to right field to drive home the first run of the game as Latour moved all the way over to third on the play setting up a Lum single through the left side to make it a 7-2 game.

WPI was swinging for the fences in the final three outs of the inning as Alex Hassett (Granby, CT) got the next three batters to fly out to center field to hang on to the mid-week win.
