WORCESTER -- The nationally-ranked WPI men's rowing's varsity eight competed for the Class of 2003 Cup on a cloudy and chilly Saturday as the Engineers made their spring debut on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Crimson and Gray, ranked ninth in the preseason IRCA/IRA Men's Collegiate Rowing Preseason Poll, finished fourth in a race that featured four top 15 crews. WPI reached Regatta Point in a time of 6:35.08, finishing behind fourth-ranked Wesleyan (6:15.90), tied for seventh Colby (6:20.21) and No. 11 Hamilton (6:31.42).
Wesleyan was victorious in all four of the Eights races. The Cardinals turned in a time of 6:24.28 in the second varsity eight, besting second place Colby (6:37.19) while the Engineers (6:42.74) placed third and Hamilton (7:14.59) fourth. The third varsity saw the same order in the top three (Wesleyan - first - 6:30.20, Colby - second - 6:51.65 and WPI - third - 6:58.74) while the Cardinals bested the hosts in a head-to-head race in the 4V (6:44.31 to 7:08.75)
Saturday also featured a Fours race which saw Colby capture gold. The Mules clocked a time of 8:01.3 to edge WPI's A entry (8:05.33) by four seconds while WPI's B boat finished in 7:08.75.
The Engineers are back at it next Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond, hosting (RV) Conn College, Division I MIT, and top-ranked Williams in the James Donahue Cup.
