Our final Summer Rewind of 2024-25 takes us back to a soggy but successful morning on Lake Quinsigamond, where WPI Men's Rowing reclaimed the McCarthy-McGee Challenge Cup with a clutch varsity eight win over Coast Guard. The Engineers bested a Division I field and strengthened their IRA postseason resume with multiple victories in front of the home crowd.
WORCESTER -- The WPI men's rowing program turned in a strong performance on a rainy Lake Quinsigamond, collecting a pair of victories during Saturday morning racing against Coast Guard, Boston College, Connecticut College, and UMass.
The men's varsity eight had the honor of throwing its coxswain in the water near Regatta Point after the Engineers reached the finish line in a time of 6:51.950 to edge Coast Guard (6:52.874). Boston College (7:15.143) and Connecticut College (7:45.645) rounded out the field.
The win over the Division I Eagles provided WPI head coach Larry Noble's crew the chance to regain the McCarthy-McGee Challenge Cup. The Cup, which was being contested for a ninth time, has now been won by the Crimson and Gray six times. Additionally, the Engineers victory over Coast Guard gives WPI an edge over the Bears in the pursuit of a bid to the season-ending IRA Division III National Championships in New Jersey in June.
The second varsity eight race belonged to Coast Guard, as the Bears surged to victory in 7:04.200. WPI was second (7:08.428), followed by UMass (7:20.957), Boston College (7:42.724), and Connecticut College (8:16.674).
In the third varsity eight, WPI took the top two spots. The Engineers' 3V boat crossed first in 7:35.150, while the 4V boat followed in second at 7:53.624. Coast Guard (8:00.136) and UMass Novice (9:06.495) finished third and fourth, respectively.
The day concluded with the varsity four race, where WPI finished third with a time of 9:07.725. UMass earned the win (8:04.700), with Boston College second (8:46.095) and Coast Guard fourth (9:31.518).
WPI will continue its spring campaign with more racing next weekend on Lake Quinsigamond in the historic New England Championships.
